Chris Person takes a look at Horses, "the indie game that is too scandalous for either Valve or Epic, is only beyond the pale if you're not familiar with any other art form" (quoted from the article blurb).

i'm sorry for bad take theater but: for a place that consists like 50% of TTRPG recommendations threads, what r/rpg will suggest to people is usually *hysterically* off-base

Mythic Bastionland (or any other flavour of into the odd)
Lancer (or a 4e-descendant of your choice, but the pilot moves are worth it)
Revolt! (or for the queen ect)
Ironsworn (gmless) (or starforged/sundered isles)

then you go Death Game to force people into trying out GMing
If you wanted to run say, four different games that weren't Dungeons & Dragons in hopes of showing people the breadth of the TTRPG hobby, what games would you run for them? Assume that they are sort of familiar with 5E.

thats not true they still exist ~ Vermis is the most famous example, but look at Iris Compiet's Faeries of the Faultline. In fact, Gnomes itself got a revised edition in 2023 and a sequal this year! The only difference is that as an adult, you have to look for this stuff yourself.
Everyone turned into the wrong type of nerd in the last 20 years and this type of fun world guide, not connected to any larger narrative, began to disappear.
Talk about "memory unlocked," just borrowed this from the library

If we can only have art from people who "aren't in it for the money" that means we can only have art from privileged middle-class dilettantes. Making art being a viable career is responsible for nearly all worthwhile art, and if it's not a viable career any more we will get drastically less of it.

I have many thoughts about this, one is I can't help but think this is all just shining a light on how games are still being held to wildly different standards than other media like film. I've played very few games like HORSES but watched so many films like it (as a connoisseur of arthouse horror).

BTW if anyone missed this due to dragonmeet this weekend i uploaded a new blog post! Its abouts cards assisting with cognitve load in ttrpgs and how i personally discovered how to handle NPCs (particularly them disappearing) its a short but sweet one forestoath.bearblog.dev/cards-in-ttr...
Cards in TTRPGS: Cognitive Load and Interactions.
TTRPGs can have a cognitive load issue. This isn't unique, it's common to all analog games but it’s common in a game style that we decided should be explaine...

i dont think you guys understand, as a mothership lover, the lack of hiding rules is so much worse than you think when it has succint detailed rules on how different levels of radiation affects you or how military training is different from training any other skill

An (older) person i spoke to recently, absolutely dissaproved of my love for horror yet approved of my love for romance, but i have a feeling they wouldn't feel the same knowing how explicit i like my romances :) interesting that

two things i want to see more in contemporary cyberpunk
- focus or mention of how governments (and legislature) collude towards the dominance of the private sectors
- A higher focus on private companies utilising terms and conditions and other practices to curtail individual freedom of expression

hey w how trad pub is likely going to be pulling back on books by marginalized authors, now more than ever, please get over whatever roadblock exists in your mind that keeps you from branching out to indie books. if the trad space starts to look dire soon (and it will), this is gonna be the solution

???? he looks excactly 49?? my father, at 46, looks like this?? Huh??
James A. Garfield was assassinated at age 49. This portrait was taken that same year. Absolutely how much older 49 year olds looked in 1881.

i just feel fantasy isn't for you. I love this stuff, its a large part of making a fantasy feel mythic and otherworldly, and is also the best form of world-building ~ cultural rather than just purely geographical
Not sure how I feel when a book tells me that instead of "12 months" they have "10 arcs," which are each 40 days long, and they all have names like Blossomarc, Flamearc Snowarc,.... I appreciate the world building, but couldnt we have just kept the calendar the same?
