I know I have a pretty varied following on here so if you aren’t dialed in to Swiftie news you might not know just how bad it is but the algorithms on the other sites have truly gone insane over this. It sounds incredibly frivolous given everything else happening rn but I really don’t think it is.

This is 100% correct. There is definitely a long history of Nazi-adjacent fascism in the US, and the political dimensions of that history occurred on the fringes of the GOP as those fascists tried to get a foothold in that institution...but the last 10 years mark a significant break in that history.

there have been a lot of responses to this arguing that young Republicans were motivated by such feelings but didn't express them openly

and I think a crucial lesson of the Trump era is that there is great value in people not expressing these things openly! that's a big and decisive change!

Look, if Taylor Swift can be called a Nazi for watered down squinty eyed “dog-whistles” without major pushback from our society then no one is a Nazi in a meaningfully harmful sense.

That accusation will lose all potency when it comes to the actual Nazis/fascists OF WHICH THERE ARE MANY.

I’m basically at the “of course governments (foreign and domestic) want us scrutinizing Taylor Swift instead of the actual ruling party of the United States” level of conspiracy.

Not to mention if they succeed in labeling her as such they will water down the allegation to be basically meaningless.

Lots of focus on the absurd use of “no kings” here, but I’d also point out that pithy “no paychecks” lines coming from the administration asking government employees they labeled lazy do-nothings to work indefinitely without pay “for the good of the country” is truly something to behold.
