Honestly curious if there is any empirical evidence on whether or not celebrity online activism has a measurable effect on public opinion

There's been a lot of discussion about the echoes of the civil rights movement in the protests today, with people obviously drawing comparisons between the strategies, tactics and coalitions that were vital then and are still vital now.

But this post has me thinking about a different echo ...
I suspect right now Stephen Miller and the other nazis are meeting to discuss how a place not as “nice" or "peaceful” as Minnesota will provide better oxygen for their lies and goals of martial law.

“These tools … were not created in America, but in Israel, still another Homeland, enforcing the longest ‘occupation’ in modern history. Thus, the citizens of Minnesota have, as American taxpayers, subsidized an occupation overseas that is effectively a laboratory for their own.”

Minneapolis is really laying a blueprint here that is telling a powerful story in organized, community resistance. Pay attention.
The people of Minnesota have executed one of the most impressive civil resistance campaigns I can remember:

- Organized a city wide general strike
- Maintained nonviolent discipline amidst violence
- Mobilized 10,000s in subzero temps to protest and watch ICE
- Flipped public opinion against ICE

Two weeks ago this guy announced he was providing legal help to the agent who shot Renee Good. That's how quickly the winds are shifting.
pretty wild statement re: Republican Chris Madel drop from race for MN governor:

"Saying he cannot support the national GOP's 'stated retribution on citizens of our state, nor can I count myself a member of a party that would do so."

Why isn’t it working? There are more people out on the streets than ever, the media is turning, and the opposition is getting ever stronger, especially at the state govt level. Protest isn’t a win button, it’s a process.

I want to format these all into beautiful things to be shared across the internet, but until I have the time for it, if you are from Minnesota and need to know that people love you and have your back, that you are inspiring people all over the world, here are some notes.

Nonviolence is, in fact, working. This administration is weaker than it was a year ago. More and more of the public is becoming galvanized against it; its agents are being impeded.
Do you honestly think people in the civil rights movement and other nonviolent movements faced no violence themselves? They practiced nonviolence because it works, because the oppressor wants a shooting war, which is the war it will win
How's your non-violent working Mr Gandhi stancil? They will kill each and everyone of you right if they had the chance and you will still be writing Kumbaya.

This must be weird news to see if you’re one of the literally hundreds or even thousands of university administrators who preemptively censored faculty, scrubbed websites, changed the names of centers, etc.

National media should really be covering the fact thay every major school, museum, and arts institution in the Twin Cities, and hundreds of local businesses are closed tomorrow to protest federal occupation.

Nothing like this at this scale has happened anywhere in America anytime in living memory.

Moreover, ICE must be destroyed

my Blackest opinion is that the presumption of conflict between "America has a long and deeply rooted history of violence" and "we can and should fight against today's version of that, as did those who came before us" is less a philosophical debate about how to treat the past and more a skill issue

Can't emphasize this enough. Moving beyond shame toward true solidarity with all people is how we get free. It's how we move toward a new and better world for those who come after us.

Repair is needed, and that repair and restoration is part and parcel of the world we're building.
I'm not saying to dunk on this person AT ALL but because I want this point elevated.

I don't want you to be ashamed to be a white American. The history of white Americans who sided against whiteness and acted in solidarity with others has been suppressed as ruthlessly as the history of violence.
At this point in the history of our country, I am very ashamed to be a white American! I don’t want to be mistaken for a thug who is so brain dead they convince themselves that they are better than anyone else because they are white!
I have never & would never BELIEVE THEIR CONVICTED FELON!

It goes without saying, but if an individual person created or even possessed 23,000 sexualized images of children they would almost certainly face prison time.

But in this case an AI chatbot did it, so I guess no one is liable. Is this what the AI tech bros mean by innovation?
In our conservative estimate, 41 percent of Grok’s images — or 1.8 million — were sexualized depictions of women. Separately, CCDH analyzed how many were sexualized images across genders and ages. Their findings: an estimated 3 million images, including more than 23,000 of children.

Something I think about a lot is how the people who voted against Trump will respond to the millions of Trump voters who are going to abandon him.

At a gut level, I get the impulse to shame and blame, leopards ate my face, etc.

But this is a generational opportunity to build anti-GOP coalition.
Awe. Even Alaska is looking a little pink in the cheeks. ☺️
