D., Perillo, J. T., Delawalla, C. (in press). Crises and opportunities for psychological science under fascism. Nature Mental Health. Abstract Psychopathology research and treatment is at a crucial juncture. Particularly within the United States, funding for scientific research has been cut drastically; academic freedom is under attack; and efforts to diversify our workforce and mitigate our field's contributions to systemic oppression have been banned outright. Ideologies vie for dominance, with reactionary centrism and institutional capitulation increasingly evident. Gaslighting plays a central role in our politics (academic, national, and beyond), but it is virtually unacknowledged within our science. At the same time, diamonds are formed under pressure. Our collective reckoning brings with it the potential for non-incremental improvements in our ability to assess, diagnose, and treat patients. These improvements arrive in the form of opportunities for paradigm shifts, particularly those involving acknowledging the gaslighting our field perpetuates; resourcefulness in conducting research; values-realignment; coalition-building within and across fields and institutions; and dissemination and outreach.

It’s genuinely wild that the United States spent decades building an elaborate rules-based international order which de facto cemented its permanent status as the dominant global hegemon, sustained by ideology rather than might, and now is just blowing it all up for literally no reason

This shooting left an innocent bystander in critical condition. He is in Seattle undergoing brain surgery for his injuries from the Alaska state troopers.

The state troopers shot two people, killing one, while responding to a mental health crisis.

Multiple troopers opened fire on a man brandishing a knife. They killed him while putting someone else in the hospital in serious condition.

On January 1, 2026, at approximately 11:30 a.m., Alaska State Troopers were notified that 24-year-old Fairbanks resident William Rexford was actively destroying property at a family residence in Fairbanks. Troopers responded to the residence and made contact with Rexford and other family members. While Troopers and family members were speaking with Rexford, Troopers determined that he was experiencing mental health issues and was making suicidal statements. As Troopers were discussing options with Rexford without warning he ran into the kitchen of the residence and armed himself with a knife. Rexford then charged at a Trooper while brandishing the knife. Multiple Troopers discharged their firearms, striking Rexford. A second adult male inside the residence was also struck by gunfire. Troopers immediately rendered first aid until emergency medical personnel arrived. Rexford was pronounced deceased at the scene. The injured adult male was transported to a Fairbanks-area hospital with serious injuries. Rexford’s body was transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy. His next of kin have been notified.

Alaska State Troopers in Fairbanks killed a suicidal man having a mental health crisis.
Troopers said they determined that Rexford was experiencing "mental health issues" and expressed a desired to harm himself after speaking with present family members and Rexford. As troopers discussed the situation with Rexford, he suddenly went into the kitchen, grabbed a knife and charged at a trooper with the weapon, officials said. Multiple troopers then shot and killed Rexford, according to the statement. Another man inside the home was seriously injured by the gunfire, according to troopers.

I’m halfway through McPherson’s “Battle Cry of Freedom” and earlier this year I listened to David Blight’s Civil War course at Yale. I really believe that understanding the Civil War era is like having the Rosetta Stone for deciphering all American politics, past and present.
