Today is the first day that I'm really not employed at the Clarion, which also makes today the first day since January 2021 that I'm not employed to do journalism. By extension, it's the first day since I got into journalism that I'm not doing that. It's weirder (and sadder!) than I expected.

I’m working the phones for KDLL’s fall membership drive this morning! Call 907-513-1996 and support local news on the Kenai Peninsula!
A Facebook post from KDLL 91.9 FM reads “It’s early o’ clock on a Saturday morning but it’s still a beautiful day to support your local non-profit public radio station! It’s day 3 of our fall membership drive and we’re still working to make up as much as we can of the loss of $140,000 in federal funding this year. You can donate by calling 907-513-1996 or visiting kdll.org to help us keep local programming and local news on the air!

Right now, your donation can go even farther, because we’re looking for 8 public radio heroes to take advantage of a donation challenger from our favorite donor, A. Nonymous, who wants to match the first 8 people who donate $500 with another $500. Double your money by calling 907-513-1996!”

There’s also a fun photo of KDLL board president Shaylon Cochran with a cup of coffee and a microphone.

Also the phones clearly aren’t ringing here at the KDLL studio often enough cause my best friend Abby is asleep. WAKE HER UP by calling 907-513-1996 and making a contribution now.

With no local reporters at the Peninsula Clarion, no one is doing local news in this area like KDLL! After the federal $ cut this year, they need support more than ever, and unlike the corporate newspaper run from out of state that I used to work for, everyone at KDLL lives on the central KPen.

It's a BEAUTIFUL day to support local, non-profit public radio on the Kenai Peninsula. We're on Day 2 of KDLL's Fall membership drive. We need to recoup the $140k in federal funding we lost this year. We're in the studio, ready for your support at KDLL.org and 907-513-1996. I'll send you a sticker!
Some of the KDLL swag you might receive by supporting local, nonprofit public media! Visit us at KDLL.org.

My respite from local news was shorter than anticipated. Went to Palmer on Saturday to help a few southeast newspapers with coverage of cross-country state championships. Find stories by me in the Wrangell Sentinel, Juneau Independent and Chilkat Valley News, also photos for Petersburg and Sitka.

Several journalists resigned this week from three newspapers in Alaska after the publications’ corporate owner made significant edits to an article about Charlie Kirk’s death, after pressure from a Republican state lawmaker who had criticized the coverage.

Is this what people without jobs do? Because otherwise it’s just been lots of Star Trek.

$20 per hour is what I was making when I resigned as the only news reporter at the Peninsula Clarion, asked to write 2-3 stories per day. I received one raise while I was there, up from $17 when I started — that increase largely wiped out by the tripling of my insurance premium this year.

Wow, last month in Everett, WA members of the Everett News Guild union staged a protest of Carpenter Media Group, calling for better wages - up from $20 per hr ! - protesting unreasonable story quotas, layoffs and censorship

Proud of the staff at The Homer News and the Peninsula Clarion who are resigning. Unfortunately, thanks to Sarah's cancel culture crusade, Alaska is losing four fantastic local journalists. Vance NEEDS to be held accountable for her overreach of power.
