Demand Safe School Zones in Ottawa!
Le francais suit It’s a common scene at schools for morning drop off and afternoon pick up times, speeding, distracted driving, close calls and tension on the streets . Many school zones lack…

The Centretown Gladstone/Gilmour bikelane and the current proposal for Bank St. bus lanes are both symptomatic of a broader problem, which is that City staff nearly always err on the side of "underwhelming" and often seem to think BIA whining (especially about parking) constitutes a formal veto.

I am glad the community is rallying to make the Gladstone/Gilmour bike lane as safe as possible. I will be channeling the feedback and advocacy to try and find some solutions with city staff. The file doesn’t go to council till January, so we have some time.

Why will this new Centretown bike lane have a detour?
While a downtown Ottawa bikeway along the corridor has been a long time coming, cyclists say a proposed route isn't the safest way.

So #IfIWasMayor: automatic 40km/h within city urban and suburban areas (as basic starting point); no right on red inside city; make case for anything above 40 with study to prove its needed/beneficial; auto sep bike infra, raised ped crossings on every street build; end shave&pave w/out infra

💯 agree - it is insane when you stop to think about it. Please sign and ask any parents you know at those schools to circulate the petition to parents, school council, school social media accounts!!! 🙏

Is Ottawa school zone safety negotiable?

🚷Delays to sidewalk builds
🚦School Street policy red lighted
📸 Automated Speed Enforcement to be cut down by Doug Ford

📣 No! Tell the Mayor to stand up to the province and anyone who makes communities less safe.

Big milestone yesterday - past 10,000km on my electric cargo bike, which I got in April2023. Ottawa is a sprawling city but you can still replace so many car trips with an e-bike… even with kids!

Once again, speed cameras work.
(This is data from Ottawa, published in 2024.)

The number of fines went op bc we installed a lot more cameras. That the average speed actually went down, as is the purpose of the cameras, is shown in this image by @strongtownsottawa.ca

This is why we need bus lands on Bank Street. We don’t need extensive consultations or debates or both side-ism to find a “balance;” we need bold action, bold leadership to design public space in the public interest and just do it. @strongtownsottawa.ca

Between the bus-only lanes, and the off-ramp detours, we’ve barely slowed down. Unless you’re on a bus, it’s a parking lot out there.

The disregard for pedestrians and basic norms and rules is astounding
eugeniewaters.bsky.social
Why would anyone think this is ok? Just hanging out. There are parking spots on the other side of the bike lane!

It's all over the city, including in subdivisions built long before parking even existed.

These should be gardens, trees, and permeable surfaces, not asphalt and pavers to store the vehicles destroying our city.

Hey @ctvnewsottawa.bsky.social @tedraymond.bsky.social. This is a pretty big deal. Less than two years ago staff said they can't keep up with front yard parking violations and limited enforcement to post 2007, pub-ottawa.escribemeetings.com/filestream.a...

Now they're not enforcing it at all.

An email I received today from Ottawa By-law:

"Management has just announced a pause on all further enforcement for driveway and walkway widenings, including those on the City Right of Way, while the City discusses how to navigate the large influx of reported issues around the City."

Love this - and despite the night photos I spot red osier dogwood shrubs and blazing star - I bet they’re doing all native pollinator plant species 💚

IF ONLY THERE WAS SOME OTHER WAY! (Bumper to bumper traffic on Bank Street headed to Landsdowne - yes, those are PARKED CARS in the right hand lane!)
Traffic backed up on Bank Street headed towards Landsdowne. The left hand lane is bumper to bumper while in the right hand lane there are two parked cars.
