The peoples mentioned aren't his natural allies. They're peoples he *hated*, peoples he thought were legitimate targets of oppression.

The poem is saying, "hey, we have to protect even these really icky people, because it turns out they won't stop there, and it WILL ruin our nation."
I think that when people are taught the Niemöller poem ("first they came for..."), it should be in the same breath as telling folks that he supported Hitler.

The poem isn't a call for concerned liberals to step in early. It's a warning for conservatives to not give in to hate.

I do wish more people understood the Niemöller piece is autobiographical. He literally meant he sat back and did nothing as each of the demonized groups was hauled off, and then when he himself fell out of favor with the very government he had supported, he got hauled off, too.

During my PhD i kept coming across this number about the maximum grid penetration for renewables.

So, I started to dig. Tracing back what references I could. Never found a single analytical or empirical basis for it. It appeared to have sprung from thin air based on some engineers' intuition.
People used to say, with great confidence, that variable renewables could never safely provide more than 5% of grid power. That estimate has crept up ever since, though the "great confidence" part never wavers.

Anyway, about China ...

The whole entire right-wing ecosystem is just grifters all the way down. Anti-trans hate is the right's favored grift-du-jour, and literally all conservatives having a meltdown about gender stuff should be assumed to be grubbing for a payday

Today is the 70th anniversary of Rosa Parks' arrest. Six myths: 1) She wasn't old or tired. 42 years old that day, she had a "life history of being rebellious" & had spent two decades helping to turn the Montgomery NAACP into a more activist branch alongside ED Nixon and Johnnie Carr.

It’s infuriating to me that I need to evaluate media to determine whether it’s AI generated now. The great “time saver” technology wastes incalculable time and energy for people who want to retain their grasp on reality
