So many new faces, I love it! If you weren’t following me on the other place, you can expect: cats, cocktails, travel photos, random science musings, things other people post that are funny or important, bouts of anger at the election outcome. Engaging in a new space can be scary but please do!

The legal, media, and academic institutions capitulating to an authoritarian ordering payments for favorable treatment are damning themselves to irrelevance. They are destroying their institutions. They will be — and should be — shunned for failing in their most basic purposes for existing.
BREAKING: Northwestern University has agreed to pay the U.S. Treasury $75 million, over the course of three years as part of an agreement with the federal government to restore funding and end investigations into the university

Only explanation is that the table on which this woman is sitting was built to have legs that look like human legs
Hey @nature.com, have you got an explanation for how the hell THIS happened? & especially why you accepted a paper with such a bizarre piece of genAI slop in it?!
& more to the point, why we should take you seriously at all going forward?

I also never get tired of MIT's conceit--"they might be good but are they **MIT** good--as if it's somehow harder to be a grad student at one of the most prestigious and best funded research universities in the world instead of 10 times easier.

My personal favorites (derogatory) are Chicago's 'are you the recommender an alum' and 'please rate the emotional stability of the applicant.'

And asking me to rate english language skills, which, toefl exists?

Uh hi this seems bad

(essentially, grant terminations will continue at you-know-who's whim)
Update on a significant development NIH grant terms.

On 10/1, a change to grant making regs went into effect that gives NIH more power to terminate grants for policy reasons.

But to use this power, new grant terms must include specific language. See @aniloza.bsky.social w/ the story from July.

If the Trump administration wishes to censor us, they can try.

But it’s a sign they have no actual rebuttal to our points. If they had facts they’d use them to persuade people. They’re not doing that. What’s coming out of the Bhattacharya NIH is instead censorship, and lies.

A quick formatting PSA from me to you: if you want to use full justification in your grants, turn on hyphenation to avoid weird spacing between words and make your proposal easier to read. This move will also buy you some extra real estate!
