When and why did "intentional" become such a ubiquitous buzzword? Was everyone doing everything by accident six months ago?

It's funny how every era has it's Old Person Actors, who if you grow up in that time, seem born into the role of grandparents, wisemen, retired veterans and grumps. Then you find out that they where yesteryears hot young people.

I dunno if any GenX stars will age into that role the same way.

Aw man, RIP Robert Duvall. When I was a kid, he was one of the great Old Man Actors, all in my mind kinda in a group with Hackman, Tommy Lee Jones, Clint etc...

Give THX 1138 a watch if you haven't.

Tried to upload to Patreon a little while back but it refused. 😔

Watched dumb Stranger Things finale. Couldn't stop cackling "wiki-wiki-wild" because of giant wasteland spider. Synced one beat to the action and watched IN HORROR as it continued to match PERFECTLY.

I AM COMPELLED TO SHARE THE PAIN.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is such a good argument for lower stakes in genre fiction. The world isn't at risk, just the lives of an artist and the knight who protected her. Baelor's choice ends up having historic ramifications, but that choice was only human. Batman writers take note.

A good thread on what happens when you use an LLM. I see this same pattern with my students. They spend all their time futzing with the prompt to get a slightly different but still not totally correct answer and no time on the actual learning.
In a genuine attempt to understand how new software impacts my work, I used the paid tier of Claude this week, which everyone says is one of the best LLM products on the market right now, to write a short script for some data analysis, and every single time it got it 90% right in a different way.

A child dying of cancer spent her final days fighting to free her wrongfully detained father from ICE custody.

This comes just weeks after a mother from Maryland was denied the right to be at her son’s side as he died from cancer.

Not one dime for this cruelty.

For many years I've noticed how a huge amount of corporate copy is glorified lorum ipsom. A mush of vague buzzwords and stock phrases with no substance. LLM can do this stuff because, even when people made it, it was never intended to be anything but a simulacra of meaningful communication.
I can’t speak to the technical uses or other industries - but as someone who has lost work to them one of the sad and sobering things about LLMs is the confirmation that my writing deliverables for most business clients never actually needed to be any good
I guess the point here is that, outside of a narrow range of technical applications, LLMs are *absolutely terrible* at producing the reliable outputs that would be necessary to think of them as successfully "automating a process". And it's on those areas where they're worst that the hype focuses.

Mark Carney said that Canada is "considering" sending aid to Cuba.

Before COVID, one million Canadians visited Cuba every year. Their convertavle peso is pegged to the Canadian Dollar. I argue that we need to send fuel and supplies ASAP, regardless of Trump.

Any time you see an "anti sex trafficking" or "anti sexual exploitation" org that promotes censorship or surveillance, look at the staff and board of directors, associated orgs, money - it's always hard right conservative christians and terfs. Every time. It's a trojan horse for reaction.
