A good thread on what happens when you use an LLM. I see this same pattern with my students. They spend all their time futzing with the prompt to get a slightly different but still not totally correct answer and no time on the actual learning.
In a genuine attempt to understand how new software impacts my work, I used the paid tier of Claude this week, which everyone says is one of the best LLM products on the market right now, to write a short script for some data analysis, and every single time it got it 90% right in a different way.

A child dying of cancer spent her final days fighting to free her wrongfully detained father from ICE custody.

This comes just weeks after a mother from Maryland was denied the right to be at her son’s side as he died from cancer.

Not one dime for this cruelty.

For many years I've noticed how a huge amount of corporate copy is glorified lorum ipsom. A mush of vague buzzwords and stock phrases with no substance. LLM can do this stuff because, even when people made it, it was never intended to be anything but a simulacra of meaningful communication.
I can’t speak to the technical uses or other industries - but as someone who has lost work to them one of the sad and sobering things about LLMs is the confirmation that my writing deliverables for most business clients never actually needed to be any good
I guess the point here is that, outside of a narrow range of technical applications, LLMs are *absolutely terrible* at producing the reliable outputs that would be necessary to think of them as successfully "automating a process". And it's on those areas where they're worst that the hype focuses.

Mark Carney said that Canada is "considering" sending aid to Cuba.

Before COVID, one million Canadians visited Cuba every year. Their convertavle peso is pegged to the Canadian Dollar. I argue that we need to send fuel and supplies ASAP, regardless of Trump.

Any time you see an "anti sex trafficking" or "anti sexual exploitation" org that promotes censorship or surveillance, look at the staff and board of directors, associated orgs, money - it's always hard right conservative christians and terfs. Every time. It's a trojan horse for reaction.

I would love to get a tv with a nice screen, lots of ports, an included widely compatible universal remote and fuck all else. Their performance as devices is always so sluggish compared to like any stand alone device

Bizarre to me that there's a bunch of liberals on here who spend all their time being mad about 'tankies' and 'leninists' as if there's enough of them to fill a mid-sized football stadium much less meaningfully move the needle on national politics.

I think the point of AI is to free people from the burden of concious thought. "the superintelligent computer" offers a substitute for god, an objective intelligence that absolves you of all the uncertainty of a subjectivity. Let the computer do the thinking: You're never wrong, never responsible.

the media is gonna be like "time for a new narrative" and it's so important to keep talking about how none of the cities they invaded have become more safe since the spotlight shifted away from them
ICE “left” Chicago in November, but they’ve disappeared three people from my community in two days this week.

Don’t believe the hype about them, leaving Minnesota, either.
