I saw a video of part of this talk, but it really is worth reading Cory Doctorow's take on how to become a better critic of AI, so we can all help pop that bubble.

In May, Human Rights Watch released a report showing how gig platforms use opaque algorithms to erode workers' wages.

Now a new investigation finds Instacart is running AI price experiments: charging different people different prices for the *same* groceries, sometimes by more than 23%.

The Girl came home feeling yucky, and with a (currently) low-grade fever, so now we get to play my least favorite game: Cold, Flu, or Covid? 😭

(We got our annual booster & flu-shot in late September, so 🤞🏼)

Next up is my own market this Saturday! The Maybe Market is organized by me and Tory Woollcott with sporadic help from a few others. I thought maybe I’d start a little thread with all the vendor spotlights I’m posting to IG.

🤣 And that’s if I remember to even take my freakin’ ADHD meds. 🙃
People abusing stimulants is so wild from the perspective of an ADHDer. "I used Adderall to work for three nights without sleeping, lol." Cool I take Adderall so I don't cry when I have to re-tie my shoes.

I wasn’t really sure what to call this creature so I settled on “Fish-Cat”. 🥴🥴

I originally saw this sculpture while unpacking a box in a dream I had. I loved it so much I thought it'd be fun to bring them to "real" life! 😂😂

Spotify is garbage on every count: Its treatment of artists, its ICE advertising, the CEO's investment in military AI, its leading role in the commodification and AI slopification of music, its terrible audio quality—you name it.

So I quit, and put together a complete guide to getting off Spotify:

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

Movie you’ve watched more than six times with a gif. Hard mode: no Stars (Wars nor Trek), LOTR, or Marvel.

I told myself no Mummy, Howl's Moving Castle, or Practical Magic. And then I was inspired by Micah's selection:

And does no one remember that USPS wasn’t even “operating in the red” until 2006, when they were forced to PREPAY their pensions? Like??? It was only repealed in 2022, I think. (And now of course this administration is trying to raid those pensions..🫠)
I'll say again: we are oddly selective about the government services about which we will say, they operate at a loss.

We say Amtrak and the post office "lose money" but we never say highways, the court system, the Pentagon, etc lose money
The USPS posting a NINE BILLION DOLLAR LOSS!!! sounds terrible. Certainly worse than if you said "USPS costs thirty dollars per person per year" even though that means the same thing and more accurately describes a government service

The proliferation of AI-generated cute animal videos is a great reason to follow animal rescues, and donate to them as long as you're doing that. For the care of the animals and also creating a space for reliably authentic videos of baby skunks skittering across hardwood floors

Being extremely careful about image/video attribution isn’t JUST important for giving credit to artists and creators. It’s also a way to slightly decrease your chances of spreading deceptive AI slop!
The thing that made me most suspicious was the lack of attribution of any kind. A conveniently perfect light-up sign at the beginning that states the premise of the video but doesn’t mention the facility, for instance. (This is part of why it’s bad to share stuff if you don’t know its provenance!)

Saw a Tiktok where a lady drove 3 hours to speak face to face to a man who left a nasty comment on a video of hers.
"Do you see how easy it was for me to find you? Doesn't feel good, does it?" (He says, "No") She says, "I could even make your Grindr account pubic, but all I want is an apology." 🤭

You are ABSOLUTELY NOT going to regret listening to this bird:
A male rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) in winter plumage.

Ptarmigan is from Gaelic 'tarmachan' meaning "croaker". The p- was added when people mistakenly assumed it was a Greek word.

A bird forever warning people: "A werewolf!" (just in case of werewolves).
