No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Can't wait to get into the office more often to put my head together with my teammates who work in other cities. We have big plans to do lots of teams meetings in open concept offices about what work we would do if we had a budget or some quiet to think.

Just finished this fantastic book, "Air-Borne". One piece Carl Zimmer understands about science is that it is fundamentally a human endeavor. At its best, it builds on the previous works of others, in other cases the interplay of society and personalities shapes how it does or does not advance.

Wyden was doing the same “hey, over here!” routine about the §215 bulk phone program long before anyone heard the name Edward Snowden.
This is how Sen. Ron Wyden clues the public into activity that he finds extremely alarming. He does a press release about a letter he sent to the director of the CIA that basically says, 'I want to make sure you saw the classified letter I sent early today.' www.wyden.senate.gov/imo/media/do...

I'm hearing from multiple people that students who submitted ecology GRFP proposals are having those proposals rejected without review, despite ecology being listed as an eligible field. If this is a programmatic change, this is devastating. Ecology is the study of Earth's life support systems.
A number of our students got the following comment back on a rejection for the NSF GFRP. They are in an eligible STEM field. Is this something people in other places are getting too? Is it a quirk or targeted?

Snow removal does wonders for pedestrians and cyclists.

These shots were taken just six hours apart. The sidewalk and bike lane are much clearer. It’s kind of amazing.

(Snow removal is different from plowing. It involves collecting snow from city streets and trucking it to snow dumps.)
