When I see LLMs pitched as a guaranteed productivity tool for software engineering, the is the counterweight I keep trying to get people to seriously engage with and not handwave away is the future cost, and “oh everything tech gets cheaper” isn’t an answer. Services don’t and LLMs are a service.

Began this Advent Sunday by rereading an essay I published over five years ago. An essay about dying matriarchs seems an ill-match but this is the one season of the church year where a matriarch is given tangible voice, so perhaps it is more apt than it would seem.

Every winter, I hear about sidewalks that are impassable due to insufficient snow clearing. Now the city says it doesn’t have the money to improve our winter quality maintenance standards. This is just one of the ways that austerity costs us all.
