let me wind the clock back a bit before the lynchings happened. Farmers in Louisiana needed labor for their fields since their slaves had been freed and no longer worked for free they needed someone else to exploit, enter the recent immigration of Sicilians and Italians to Louisiana.

The only reason why there's a Columbus Day in the United States is because:

-Italian-American relations got to be so bad that we gave Italians here the holiday just to improve them

-it was a way of saying sorry for the mass lynching of Italians in New Orleans.
