The internet's definitive source for reliable factually accurate barely news and almost information about science fiction. Inexplicably a 5-time Hugo finalist. hugoclub.blogspot.ca

Well, it's been a rather extraordinary year for SFF overall.

Got a lot to think about when trying to sort out our nominating ballots for the 2026 Hugo Awards.

Updated our recs list: hugoclub.blogspot.com/2025/03/open...

What's at the top of your list?

What are you excited to nominate for awards?
If Isaac Asimov's family had tried to flee Russia only eighteen months later than they did, the Johnson-Reed Act would have kept them out of the USA.

So here's the thing: If you hate refugees, you don't get to read Asimov. That's the rule.
With this there would have been no Mo Farah. No Freddie Mercury. No Lenny Henry. No George Michael. No Meera Syal. No Sadiq Khan. No Sajid Javid. No Salman Rushdie. No Hanif Kureishi.

Love to see the Sedgwick County Zoo putting out a good explainer on why GenAI slop videos of animals are a problem & how to identify them! It’s succinct, easy to read, and doesn’t shame people for not knowing better. A+ useful link to share with family and friends.

The Reality of AI Animal Content – Sedgwick County Zoo
If you spend any time on social media, you’ve probably seen them – bears bouncing on trampolines, apes caught on doorbell cameras, or “rescued” wild animals acting in ways that seem too good to be…

When I was sailing through the sea,
I asked Pete Hegseth “who shall I slay?”
Will I kill the helpless?
Will I kill the shipwrecked?
Here's what he had to say:

“Kill them all, them all”
“Whomever you slay, you slay”

(With sincere apologies to Doris Day)

The only silver lining to the existence of AI slop is that now nobody suspects that I’m the one responsible for all that erotic futa Snorks fan art.

Somehow had missed the news that #HugoAward finalist Tom Stoppard passed away a couple of weeks ago. Genuinely one of the greats.

Interesting to note that he also wrote the screenplay for Empire of the Sun, which of course is based on the early life of Nebula-finalist SFF author J.G. Ballard.

Anyway is this the story I had published this year that made the most people claim to have leaked their precious vital essences out of their eyes? MAYBE. Am I thinking about the end of the world a lot? (A lot a lot a lot?) YES.

I hate to be that person from near(ish) Porlock, but THIS DOESN'T SCAN RIGHT! The syllable structure is all wrong!

Our boy didn't spend all his time getting off his face on smack to have his metre done wrong like this! ;-)

Best poem Hugo, that's kinda cool
In Anaheim did Worldcon
a special Hugo Award decree
where sci-fi verse
with rhymes diverse
were celebrated as best poetry

(With apologies to Samuel Taylor Coleridge)

Yes, there will be a Hugo for Best Poem in 2026. The press release is out. The LAcon V will be updated later today.
