remember how much you hated Joe Manchin? that guy really sucked! anyway he was to the left of multiple members of the 60-member Dem supermajority of 2008, truly a murderer’s row of dipshits

This is equally true in DC, where many future political operatives get their start as idealistic twentysomethings who are passionate about what they do but who are also "single and looking to mingle".
So, I don't think this is quite right (and this is my fault for compressing the point into a tweet). As she makes clear, she joined for ideological reasons. But the party, incidentally, has also been a huge part of her life emotionally. This is true for loads of politicos!
Joining a party for the partying and the chance to meet your future spouse doesn't really shout "serious politician".
