ROMAN CITIZEN #1: Gallinus is the mightiest charioteer in the circus. He will surely win the favor of Minerva
ROMAN CITIZEN #2: @Cato is this true?
CATO: Many people believe that Carthage must be destroyed. It’s a complex issue and the reality is probably more nuanced than that.

the atrophy of the legislature predates trump's emergence by more than 20 years; you can trace it to Gingrich and the Republican Revolution. one of their big priorities was slashing budgets, so congress had fewer expert staff (and had to rely more on lobbyists for basic legislative tasks)

i think there’s a selection/survival bias here. israel’s psychotic brutality has alienated most liberals. those it hasn’t alienated are unusually 1) racist against palestinians or 2) animated by their social media beefs. both types are one big step towards fascism already.

yeah, there's an older post of mine where i make the wu/rowling comparison more directly. it's the same process but for whatever reason when zionism is the driving factor it supercharges it. rowling took a lot longer to get where she is and she still isn't at "defending captive dreamer" level

wu, pavlou, and fetterman are charting out a fascinating new pathology: a combination of zionism and negative polarization that turns libs directly into nazis

biden was a centrist in the most literal sense, in that he tried to position himself at the ideological center of the democratic party. that’s why he was more open to economic populism than other “moderates.” it turns out he had one area of strong personal convictions, but it was horrific.

the best possible outcome of this is that he gets so pissy and jealous he cancels the invasion of venezuela out of spite

both questions have a very obviously
correct answer but you’d be surprised at where some members of each party fall out

just as the primary divide within the e democratic party is whether to try something to oppose trump or not, the primary divide within the republican party is whether Politics Is Over Forever or not.

i think the assumption that "whoever follows trump won't pursue vengeance for anything that happened 2025-2029" is load-bearing for a lot of different actors right now and i think it's less true than everyone acts

the fact that spanberger is going to do juche numbers is funny, but the fact that the national party is going to over-index the win to ideology is less funny

like, they can and will make life hell for immigrants, nonwhites, and LGBTQ+ people, but they can’t simply will society into hating those people like they do, and the latter is what they *actually* care about.

the reason the second trump regime has been simultaneously so destructive and so slapdash is that they are trying to accomplish something that is fundamentally impossible and incoherent: to establish a comprehensive cultural regime top-down through main force
choamchomsky.bsky.social
there’s a fight in act 2 that’s basically widow on crack, but because you actually have a ton of movement tools and health/silk upgrades by that point it feels so nice

if we lived in the medieval period the pope would already have placed america under interdict
choamchomsky.bsky.social
it may just be to bait trump into imposing even larger, and more self-destructive, port fees (and other ill-thought-out retaliatory methods)

delusions about the power of AI are driving the sharp right turn among both the administration and elites. they believe that they don’t need a competent government, or lots of skilled employees, or even popular support, because they can just replace people with AI 1-to-1.

this means you can equip druid’s eyes, multibinder, and just hug her with the wanderer’s crest and go unga bunga on her face. you’ll parry some attacks and others will miss you because you’re in i-frames from taking contact damage. when you are down 4 masks, just retreat, go high, and heal.
choamchomsky.bsky.social
so the trick with karmelita (which i don’t love, for the record) is that her attacks all deal 2 damage but her contact damage is only 1. you can also heal in complete safety by leaping to the top of one wall than leaping and double jumping again to be WAY high up in the middle
choamchomsky.bsky.social
it’s not just that they’re all in on culture war, it’s that they’re all in AND they’re taking very unpopular positions on lots of culture war issues because they’re so marinated in nazi media that they think these positions are mainstream

i think that if trump isn’t either dead or mindlessly demented by 2029, the stress of whatever process ends with him being deposed will finish him off. he clearly doesn’t intend to leave, even though i don’t think he has a good way to save himself from having to leave.

i think the next administration publicly demolishing every ugly-ass thing trump built during this term would make for some great TV.

on ACA subsidies democrats benefit from being “the health care party.” poll after poll shows that democrats are more trusted on health care and are perceived as the ones who fight for it. the GOP isn’t going to get credit for saving the ACA or making it more available, even if they did.

it’s hard to assess how intelligent anton is because much of his writing is consciously aimed at a tremendously stupid audience

the problem with writing actually feasible combat in a science fiction setting is that once you can drop rocks on people from orbit that pretty much obsoletes any kind of land-based warfare unless you engineer some specific technology to enable it (i.e. “a rock-proof but not dropship-proof shield”)
