the nice thing about politics is I don't need to pay any attention at all. greens are weirdos and losers, but they don't want to ban me from public places and labour do, so they're better

The problem with this argument is that if the affordable mandates lead to even a modest reduction in building they quickly become self defeating. If a 25% mandate leads to a 20% reduction in supply then you are constantly exchanging two market rate homes for one affordable home.
Over half of those homeless children in temporary accommodation were in London (97k) which makes now an interesting time to be considering a cut to affordable housing in London

I still have the letter I got back from William Hague when I wrote to him as a queer teenager arguing for the end of Section 28 and the equalisation of the age of consent - he confidently asserted that Section 28 would never be repealed and age of consent never equalised.
Not once have I seen an explanation for why teenagers must hear things that upset them in virtue of the unspecified speech-acts being upsetting, nor have I ever seen an explanation for why teenagers will be forbidden to express displeasure with upsetting things.
William Hague: Why I’ll banish ‘safe spaces’ at Oxford
The new chancellor tells Cheltenham Literature Festival that there will be no ‘cancel culture’ and students should expect to hear things that upset them
October 14 2025, The Times
The new chancellor of Oxford University has said there will be no safe spaces for students and warned would-be undergraduates that they will “hear things that will upset and offend them”.
you are now so old that there are BBC articles about dated youth culture from 10 years ago, and it seems strange and newfangled to you

In an environment where there are regular anti immigrant protests, anti-semitic attacks at an all time high and where racist harassment on twitter appears to be de facto decriminalised, it seems odd priorities

one thing that has been obvious for a while is this aspect of the authoritarian internationale: they recognize that their allies abroad are not *countries* but *political movements* within foreign countries.

time we liberals woke up and recognized this--because it's the truth.
Or maybe, just maybe, what was obvious in 2024 was correct: Netanyahu fully backed Trump and would not deal with Biden because Trump would give him a free hand to escalate the starvation, bombing, and do full ethnic cleansing. Which he then did, until Netanyahu embarrassed him by bombing Qatar.

THANK YOU. THIS IS WHAT WE MEAN WHEN WE SAY EVERY BILLIONAIRE IS A POLICY FAILURE. IT'S THE INSTABILITY LARGE CONCENTRATIONS OF POWER CREATE. NOT THE LOST REVENUE.
“The problem with billionaires isn’t that they’re hoarding money that would otherwise pay for a Scandinavian social utopia. It’s that their money has become a source of wildly distorted political power that allows a few men with extremist views to wreak havoc on the rest of us.”

Over the weekend, the world's richest man appeared on screens in central London to call for a race war and for the UK government to be overthrown. No arrests were made in connection with that communication.
Journalists have been detained and a van showing images of Trump and Jeffrey Epstein has been confiscated in Windsor. This follows a separate incident in which four people were arrested for projecting images onto Windsor Castle.

trans rights strike at a fundamental base of individual liberty: if we do not have control of our own bodies, you don’t either
Trans rights are not the rights of a tiny minority, trans rights are everyone’s rights to self-determination, control of our bodies, and a society where opportunity and aesthetics are not restricted by sex assigned at birth

You should support and defend trans people because trans people are people

Many shocking things about the last 24 hours; but the contrast between the Labour government’s response to peaceful protest against genocide, and its non-response to violent racist protest against liberal democracy, is high on the list.

"Charlie Kirk gave me the courage to be more transphobic" is a wild thing to put in a both-sides hagiography
www.nytimes.com/2025/09/11/u...
‘He Gave Me Confidence’: How Charlie Kirk Connected With Young Men
With his right-wing group Turning Point USA, Mr. Kirk engaged controversial topics. Some students were inspired. Others found his views appalling.

As a Christian, he did not always feel he could say what he actually thought about the issue.

“It’s kind of scary to say what you believe in, especially in this cancel culture,” said Porter LaFeber, a 22-year-old studying sciences at Utah Valley University who was at an event on Wednesday where Mr. Kirk was killed. “Charlie Kirk seemed like he just went totally above that. He kind of gave a voice to the people that were maybe a little bit scared.”

“He gave me the confidence to be able to believe what I believe,” Mr. LaFeber added.
