Follow-up to my complaint post yesterday, I do have to say that thanks to advocates first & @pbotinfo.bsky.social the trip from inner SE to Burnside Powell's is amazingly better from when I moved to Portland 10+ years ago. Better Naito + Kermit lanes on Oak & Harvey Milk are so intuitive.

Remember a few weeks ago when Trump brought in a couple bulldozers and demolished about a third of the White House? That was weird.

Oh the irony of nearly getting left hooked riding the new SW 4th bike lane on the way to this author event (& then 2 blocks later have someone tell me I should be wearing brighter clothes).

But I'm here, out of the house.

A Trump supporter started murdering his way through an assassination list of Democratic law makers FIVE MONTHS AGO. He murdered my colleague Melissa Hortman, and her husband Mark — and attempted to assassinate my dear friend John Hoffman and his wife Yvette. I was also on the hit list. WTF
Insanity

All I’ve got is observation, and I feel like I’ve observed MORE unhoused folks in inner SE in the past 2 months than I did this summer. I don’t know exactly what that means, but it’s definitely Not Good.

Things that will get you kicked out of academia forever:
- taking maternity leave at the wrong time
- spending too much time with your kids
- reporting harassment
- not moving every 2-3 years
- taking a partner's job/preferences into account
- mouthing off before tenure
A guy makes ONE tiny mistake (has a years-long friendship with the world's worst sex trafficker; brags about sexually harassing colleagues; is racist; says women are stupid) and his whole LIFE is blown up (does slightly fewer speaking engagements; keeps teaching at #1 university)??!?!?!?!?!
So Harvard is keeping this guy, but Claudine Gay had to step down over ginned up plagiarism accusations and bad-faith accusations of anti-Semitism.

Got it.

Somehow spinning this as some sort of tech advancement makes it even worse. You can quote me, the mom of one of these new kids out of college.
Kevin Hassett: "I think there could be a little bit of an almost quiet time in the labor market, because firms are finding that AI is making their workers so productive that they don't necessarily have to hire the new kids out of college and so on."

Admittedly I don't get all the soccer rules, but it sure seems like a lot of push downs that stop forward progress are NOT getting called in this game. #nwsl

Bike rides in misty rain can't solve our problems, but damn they sure do help make them feel a lot smaller.

Gosh this is bringing up really bad feelings about meetings I had decades ago with men in power in my profession (earth science) where I thought we were there to talk about my work & suddenly realize they didn’t give a fuck about my work, only about fucking. So much self doubt & confusion & anger.
The emails have Summers reporting to Epstein about his attempts to date a Harvard economics student & to hit on her during a seminar she was giving.

indeed, for every academic abuser and enabler: i promise there’s an amazing grad student out there who is doing work that’s as good or better.

we’ve let the myth of the lone genius guy carry on too long. it’s caused so much harm, in so many ways.
I refuse to believe that Larry Summers' expertise and skills are indispensable in any way. Please find another economist and policy expert, @americanprogress.bsky.social. There are loads out there.

So many things to pick apart here, but I’m stuck on “houses that ought by right go to…”. And while I most definitely agree that housing is a basic need and should be a ‘right’ of every human, it isn’t and it doesn’t practically everywhere.
JD Vance: "A lot of young people are saying housing is way too expensive. Why is that? Because we flooded the country with 30 million illegal immigrants who were taking houses that ought by right go to American citizens."

Look what happens when you give full criminal immunity to someone who didn't believe the rules apply to them anyway. Sometimes imagining the worse case scenario is appropriate basis for judicial decision making.

Because how do you hold people to the law when you actually can't?
