Happy first week of the 2025 US Open (and bday week for Bob + me) to all who celebrate!

I regret there’s not a sold-out run of Pavement shows all week in NY again this year; alas, I’m looking forward to seeing y’all + them in TX in September!

Meanwhile, catch us (forever) in the cheap seats. 🎾♥️✌️
Stephen Malkmus, Bob Nastanovich, and Carley Carden sit on the ground amidst a crowd in the plaza outside Arthur Ashe Stadium at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Queens, New York watching the Daniil Medvedev vs. Novak Djokovic match projected on the big screen in the penultimate set of the 2023 US Open men’s tennis finals.
We were cheering for Medvedev, obvi.

Reading for pleasure has fallen by 40 percent since 2000. This is not progress. You should read because it's good for your brain, your soul. You should read because our freedoms will not long endure in a post-literate world. Most of all, you should read because it's fun.

We should be asking this
c o n s t a n t l y.

Agreed, on all counts. And the first one most of all. 💔

Nah, there were some that *even I* easily recognized, but to me, they genuinely sounded like manufactured talking points interlaced with ugly quasi-slurs or (usu mildly) derogatory framing being parroted by kids with a relatively pure, legit and valid cause for which they were advocating.

Completely true re: devolution in some places.

re: areas of heavy and repeated ICE infiltration, surveillance, and activity, including patterns of heavy, violent, and fast-moving abductions, continued

If the regions of focus for ICE and CBP are going to shift, you're going to have to be prepared for what that means. Deep structures of trust to meet people's basic needs. An understanding that you cannot and will not know the full scope of action on a given day. Bracing for loss after loss.

That does horrible things to a community, to people's ability to function. There are families who haven't left their homes in weeks, relying on networks of trust to bring them essentials. Kids staying home from school, fear about every unknown car on the block. And those fears are not unfounded.

Young ppl are usu in the vanguard not only bc of “the courage” but also bc, by nature of age/inexperience, they’re the ones least invested in any hierarchical systems of oppression threatened by the material changes required for justice + peace—i.e., they’re most idealistic AND have least to “lose.”

Calling for a ceasefire during Vietnam was a death sentence for many.

We haven't been "here" before but we've been close.

Standing and saying "not in my name" is always the first step and it's usually the young folks that have the courage to do it first.

I can’t help but think today about how many young people were savaged on social media, branded as anti-semites and abandoned by their schools for daring to call for a ceasefire. I remember saying that it was the first time I can remember that calling for ceasefire was regarded as a hostile demand.

We have a lot of work to do right here to build trust.

maybe this will help some realize that you don’t need access to cover the government effectively. in fact, it’s actually better.

I remember someone once scolding me that advocating for cats to be indoor-only is “classist” because not everyone can afford toys to keep them entertained inside. I was like madam their favorite things are sticks, crinkly paper, and cardboard boxes. Literal garbage.

My cat will play with a wooden chopstick for literal months on end.

In my experience with my own cats and shelter cats, they’re very often more interested in the stick end of wand toys rather than the fancy expensive end. Sticks are premium toys.

My youngest cat loves a good twig 😝 Sometimes he'll pick one up from outside and parade around the kitchen with it in his mouth like he's proud of le stick.

In prison, Israeli guards told him again and again they had killed his entire family as psychological torture meant to break him. When he walked up the stairs of his home today, his wife rushed into his arms, with his children and parents beside her - alive, waiting, delirious with joy and relief.

My sons Jaime Jaquez Jr. (MIA) and Jacob Toppin (ATL) earned strong honorable mentions, tho, in the good-looks hoopin’ on the hardwood division.
carleycarden.bsky.social
Same for me and the Dawgs, baybee. Hunker down, Dawgs, and sic ‘em(!), etc., etc.
carleycarden.bsky.social
Hah, the Hawks video crew has a whole (hilarious) pregame short making fun of all the Heat fans in ATL who show up to Hawks games. The ushers will, mostly jokingly, give me ABSOLUTE HELL when I’m wearing a MIA jersey to rep my sons in here.
carleycarden.bsky.social
Hell yeah, brother. 😎🤙 S/o from section T3, @alf954.bsky.social!

“Wipe Me Down,” etc., etc. 🔥✌️

I love getting FREE BASKETBALL(!) in OT, even if I’m mere yards away from Monday Night Football, where the Atlanta Falcons are lowkey dominating the Buffalo Bills at ATL’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

And the Dwyane Wade jerseys are GOING CRAZY up in this muh’ right now. 🔥
carleycarden.bsky.social
JACOB TOPPIN IS ALSO MY SON, BTW. ♥️ 🦅

The amount of LUDACRIS we play at ATL sporting events is—and I hope will forever be—LUDICROUS.

And while we’re talking looks on the hardwood, I’ll add that Asa Newell (ATL) and Ethan Thompson (MIA) are ~BY FAR~ the most handsome young men out here hoopin’ this eve.
