Dear [elected leader],
Today I am ashamed to be a US citizen. The actions of the Trump administration in invading Venezuela and kidnapping their head of state is obviously illegal, both in US and international law, but more importantly it is a moral horror. This blatant disregard for the lives of other human beings, the sovereignty of other nations, and for the international laws and conventions that make use of force a last resort, come on the heels of months of murder by air strike which has faced very little protest in the halls of power. Now again we see institutions and civilian leadership falling in line with this unconscionable fracturing of international law and global order.
I will not pretend that this is all without precedent. I marched against the Iraq war, and the removal of leaders in the Americas, such as in Haiti and Panama come to mind as parallels. We have a long, shameful, history of meddling in other countries in this hemisphere before and after the Monroe Doctrine. However we have crossed a rubicon here both ethically and in de facto reality. This government has chosen to reject international law and the moral responsibility that those with power are entrusted with by their constituents by dismantling US diplomacy, soft power and allegiances. There are no tools in the administration’s kit anymore but violence.
The US has proved that if you have the military tools to achieve it you can extend your power wherever you want and take what you like. What answer is there now to Putin taking Ukraine? Poland? Lithuania? To China conquering Taiwan? To Israel kidnapping the Ayatollah? Not to mention the wave of anti-US sentiment that this will unleash worldwide. The days and years ahead will show us the consequences of a world without rules, where might makes right and diplomacy is supplanted by a selection of protection rackets.
