They were/are a religion, not a general charity. In the early day, they didn’t do any charity, just recruiting souls. They used to help the bosses harass strikers by drowning out speakers with loud singing. Joe Hill got sick of it and wrote new words to one of their hymns. 1/3

I'm about 75% through Chris Hayes Sirens Call book. The irony is that a book about attention requires a significant amount of attention, so I only read a couple pages at a time. I want to make sure I'm not skimming or surface reading.
