Currently reading The Cracked Mirror by @brookmyre.bsky.social

Basically “what would a joint investigation between Connelly’s Harry Bosch and Christie’s Miss Marple look like.”

And I have to say it’s one of the most fun books I’ve ever read.

It feels like it was written just for me.

We consider it a resolution rather than an ending. R&S will be back one day, but meantime Ambrose will be starting a new series.

I snuck in a reference in Not The End Of The World too. I am not alone among crime writers, however. @beathhigh.bsky.social named his novel The Falls after a Mutton Birds song, and John Connolly has referenced them as well.

Well, this is nice. The Cracked Mirror has been chosen as one of the Waterstones Paperbacks of the Year.

A few years ago, the coked-up tossers outside asylum hotels would have been outside the homes of suspected paedophiles, or indeed paediatricians. They're worthless arseholes who need to tell themselves they're superior to somebody, and our miserable government is assuring them that they're right.

Heading to the Edinburgh Futures Institute tomorrow, site of the world's biggest and best book festival.
I'm on at 8:30, chatting to Denise Mina about The Cracked Mirror and the forthcoming return of Jack Parlabane in Quite Ugly One Evening.

I think much of the English right built their identity on Brexit, which they never believed in their wildest dreams would happen, but when they got it they realised it solved absolutely nothing, left them bereft of ideas and office, and now they’re thinking, “ah, f—k it, let’s try revolution.”

Thanks, James. That means a lot. I also save certain books for a holiday, so I know how it feels when that book delivers.

Yes. The book is partly about him dealing with middle age.

I couldn't possibly comment.

First look at the cover for Quite Ugly One Evening, the new Jack Parlabane novel out in May. It's a locked-room murder mystery set on board a trans-Atlantic liner, and is quite definitely a return to the tone of Quite Ugly One Morning.
