Remember how I said I have it written into my foreign-language contracts that my work has to be translated by an actual human? This shit is why.

Those book translations are gonna suck. They'll save money putting out books that are going to be painful to read. That's not a great long-term strategy.
French publishing house Harlequin decided to use AI translation instead of human translations.

All their freelance translators (some of whom had been working with Harlequin for +30y!!!) were told they would no longer receive work from Harlequin

Hazel Scott was a phenomenal jazz pianist and classical prodigy. She was also a trailblazer in Hollywood, refusing roles that trafficked in stereotypes.

She was a civil rights advocate, mother, a friend to other icons and a woman navigating love. With Love From Harlem invites us to see all of it🥹

Day 10 #LibFaves25 is (no surprise) a realistic story of loss -but wrapped in a feel-good romcom. MCs are widowed & facing 1st holiday season single. When set up, they realize having a grief buddy is nice, but are they ready for more? Homage to classic Xmas films = ready for holiday display 📚

Another contender for my top 10 reads!
Day 9 #LibFaves25 pick: Sarah Beth Durst’s ENCHANTED GREENHOUSE. Released from enchantment for illegal use of sorcery, Terlu finds herself stranded on a snowy island with only a grumpy gardener for company. When the magical greenhouses need help, can she find a way to give it? Charming & delightful

As the upheaval of the past six years finally ends, I'm hopeful to learn more about bibliotherapy- specifically dealing with loss and grief.

I always enjoy Scalzi scifi, but as I don't think I can squeeze this into my #LibFaves25 I am cheerfully reposting 📚
THE SHATTERING PEACE is my pick today for #libfaves25 Returning to the Old Man's War universe for the 1st time in a decade, @scalzi.com delivers plenty of action, twists, turns, & of course, witty banter in his newest novel that's perfect for OMW fans, but also for new comers. #booksky 📚

Day 9 #LibFaves25 (these have been in no particular order fwiw & I'm struggling on the last 2 to list!)

THE INCANDESCENT by Emily Tesh. Enjoyed the "dark acadamia" but from the beleaguered admin POV.

This is why I like efforts like NPR’s Books We Love and #LibFaves25 because they lead me to discover less publicized titles.
This is a good reminder for those of us making best of lists that if yours looks like everyone else's, it's a sign that you need to read more widely. There is so much great work that often goes unnoticed because it doesn't get a splashy marketing campaign.
My condolences to writers and artists who have done great work but have cracked few (or no) year-end lists.

A first-world problem, to be sure, but I know how much that stings. Rest assured, you all did great and deserved better.

Day 8 #LibFaves25 THE WITCH ROADS by Kate Elliott. Part 1 of duology (2 is also great). Terrific fantasy with some atypical elements I appreciated. But I can't beat the author's description (especially the alt text for the cover).
In case you were looking for a grimsweet fantasy roadtrip, THE WITCH ROADS is available now.
My grimsweet fantasy road trip (on foot) lands today w/ a humble deputy courier forced to guide uppity court officials on a back country route that includes a ravenous fungal ghost plague, court intrigue, & a mysterious haunt.
First of a duology (bk 2 in Nov).

Day 7 #LibFaves25 is the reflective nature writing of James Rebanks, THE PLACE OF TIDES. Recounts life-changing months on a remote island off the coast of Norway, learning from an old woman who practiced the ancient tradition of collecting eiderdown from birds that nest on this remarkable landscape
Not only a book about a remarkable woman & the tradition she kept alive, but deeply reflective about the natural world, our role as stewards, and how we must not lose sight of the true value of finding harmony with both nature and each other. 📚 #Booksky
My new book The Place of Tides is now available as a paperback in the U.K., and a hardback in the US

Day 6 #LibFaves25 WHEN THE CRANES FLY SOUTH by Lisa Ridzén. Narrator is an elderly man being cared for at home, missing his wife (in a home with alzheimers), struggling with his adult son. Amazing insight into the thoughts, memories & emotions at the end of life. Brutally sad and very human.
Finished this in tears. Amazing insight into aging, slowly losing contol over every part of daily life, & taking stock of relationships, esp regrets. Gave a whole new perspective to how Dad may have felt having others take care of him. Somber, yet tender. When the Cranes Fly South by Lisa Ridzén 📚

Make a family code word. Ask for it. Don’t ever volunteer it when someone calls you. Make them say it to you.
This is actually a really common scam these days. A scammer will call and use AI to replicate a family member’s voice and the family member will sound distressed and having an emergency so you don’t have time to think. Best thing to do is hang up and call that family member “back” to confirm.

Day 5 #LibFaves25 This was technically pubbed last year, but on 12/30 so I have to give it a pass as I didn't read it until 2025. Cross-generational friendship, a long lost love, and a love lost too early. Several twists but a happy ending. Simply delightful. 📚
Started a book that is so heartfelt, kind and gently funny that I'm now slowing down to make it last longer: Eddie Winston Is Looking for Love by Marianne Cronin.
