I truly didn’t think anything could shock me anymore, but the number of white women I know who have come out of the woodwork in the past 24 hours to mourn Kirk on Facebook after a decade of silence on anything political has my jaw on the floor. Why him, of all people and incidents? I don’t get it.

It’s good to remind yourself, more and more these days, that death is not an absolver. Sometimes it’s just the end to a long pattern of harm.
James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family and one of the most influential voices in the conservative evangelical movement, has died at age 89

Jay Leno is a good example of someone whose opinions I think just do not need to be news. He has gone off to live with his money, and every now and then he says something uninteresting that sounds exactly like what you would say if nothing you saw happening in the world mattered to you.

My mom and stepdad are from the same diaspora group as Zohran Mamdani’s dad (same like “my stepdad was kicked out of the same town and knows some of his classmates”) and apparently the New York Times doesn’t understand how diaspora works, so I am going to tell you a little about my mom’s people!

Whenever I think about the fact that in the US, healthcare is tied to employment, I think about my mom working until she was too sick from terminal cancer to go to the office.

Her death radicalized me.

We don’t have to do this to people.

These Medicaid cuts are a death sentence for millions.

I am grieving the barbarism that is going to unfurl from all this. People are going to die. Livelihoods gone. All to feed a corrupt kleptocracy.

I see every day up close how different it is from the first time around. There are no guardrails. A disaster. I’m sorry we have to live through this.

one thing that is important to emphasize at that this is just republican governance at work! this is what happens when you give republicans power in washington!
Final vote. 50-50. VP breaks the tie.

One single GOP Senator could have stopped this abomination. Saved millions of parents from watching their child go hungry. Saved the lives destroyed when Medicaid disappears.

They will all live forever with the horror of this bill.

this was always annoying, but now that there are no republicans left who even pretend to do it back, it is a level of Charlie Brown / Lucy / football clownery that no one can take anymore
Something the Mamdani win demonstrates is the extent to which the reigning cadre of ancient, establishment, centrist Dems think it’s more important to be on good terms with their GOP colleagues than it is to represent their own voters, and how thoroughly sick of this literally everyone is.

As we all have been saying for ages this is the only way a bathroom bill can work: If one of JK Rowling's hate-filled cultists thinks you or your mum doesn't look sufficiently feminine then they will post your photos online and try to ruin your life. They will target trans and cis people alike.
JK Rowling’s words are reckless and put trans people at risk. Saying “decent men will stay out” and encouraging people to photograph and shame others in toilets invites random harassment. This isn’t about safety, it spreads fear and hate. Trans people deserve respect and protection.

I am thinking about the trans kids at home watching their parents rejoice and their relatives take victory laps on social media. I am thinking about the mental health crises they will experience and those who will not make it to the other side because some adults decided theology trumps flourishing.

This morning I am thinking about the Christians cheering the ruling in United States v. Skrmetti, cheering the dead bodies of beloved trans children, cheering the destruction of life. I am thinking about the Christians obsessed with the genitals of minors while they call us "groomers" and predators.

I wish journalists would stop framing political news as wins or losses for politicians or political parties. It’s an abrogation of our mission. Why do we keep doing this? Is the spending bill a win or loss for the American people? Who does it help? Who does it hurt? Is it sound policy? Fiscally?

Tomorrow, flood Capitol Hill switchboards to voice your opposition to this monstrosity.

A central problem with this analysis is that the last few months have shown that those of us who have opposed Trump reflexively and performatively have also been much more correct about what he would do if unleashed than those who keep warning to take a more measured approach
Why on earth would a protest movement against the worst president in US history begin by acknowledging that he's not so bad
