'How did an idea with so much potential traction and reach – hundreds of thousands of people signed up to support the idea of a movement spearheaded by Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana before it even existed – become so quickly and comprehensively bogged down in power struggles and infighting?'

Resolution Foundation analysis of the Chancellor's Budget:

Typical families gain approximately £230 from energy bill support, fuel duty & rail fare measures.

Scrapping two-child benefit limit helps over half a million families by an average of £5,000.

The Budget is progressive overall, RF finds.

Today we’ll get latest net immigration figures - They’ll show immigration for work is plummeting.

Why is this not part of the discussion on Rachel Reeves balancing her books & stalled growth?

For every 100,000 drop in net immigration, the OBR adds £7bn to the deficit. #r4today

Oh but you know, when the extremely wealthy old guard do it it's okay. In fact, it's good for the nation. When the party of the workers and unions do it it's bad and set to bankrupt us all because they are worse for us than the billionaires born to rule are.
Why are people suddenly pearl clutching over income tax thresholds?

Where have you been for the last 4.5yrs?

The freeze has been in place since Apr 2021, when Chancellor Sunak froze them from 2021 to Mar 2026!

Then Chancellor Hunt froze them further in Autumn 2022 to Mar 2028!

This is not the pluralism a healthy and true democracy needs. So now I see that this is just like an authoritarian communist state where a few own everything and tell the masses it's good for them its that way. Both approaches point to how mush worse it would be if they were in the East/West.
“Just three companies – DMG Media, News UK and Reach – control 90% of UK national newspaper circulation, a 20% increase in market concentration since 2014. Newsquest and National World – control 51% of the UK’s 882 local newspapers and local news websites”

Exactly. This is capitalism and it's what the people want until their profits tank.
Hairdressers moaning about the budget and saying they’re going to have to lay off staff - the road I walk down most days is hairdressers or barbers or beauty parlours every other shop front. There are too many of them. Sooner or later some of them will go out of business. There aren’t enough heads!

Although unsurprising it is depressing. There was a time that the once respectable broadsheet that the Times once was would never have been an ad rag for a racist. Someone whose harm was so injurious that the victims are still traumatised by it nearly 50 years on. Shame on the Times!
Quick analysis of The Times today:
Wall to wall negative coverage of Labour’s budget. An editorial that tuts about lack of growth but takes no responsibility. And a double page ad to join Farage/Reform.
Absolutely no analysis on how rightwing ideology - including Brexit - has been utterly ruinous.

Not sure it fits the narrative to report the facts
Net migration fell sharply agaim to 204,000 in the year to June 2025, having been 344k in 2024 and 848k in 2023. But falling immigration has been the biggest secret - and it is time for the media and political debate to catch up with this change

Net migration, the difference between those entering and leaving the country, was 345,000 in 2024 according to revised figures.

Farmers were banned from protesting in Whitehall by Police but went ahead & broke the law by doing so👇🏼

September 857 were arrested for showing support for Palestine Action.. a group calling for an end to Genocide in Gaza

Farmers are bitching about Death Duty.. so how many arrests so far❓
Farmers ignore tractor ban and take inheritance tax protest to Westminster
Police had banned tractors from Whitehall, but farmers angry about Rachel Reeves's tax changes brought their budget day protest to Westminster anyway.

If Farage had just admitted, apologised and repented his teenage racism - water under the bridge. But the fact that he has denied the truth and maligned those saying it NEARLY FIFTY YEARS ON, indicates to me not only his untrustworthiness, but that these antisemitic beliefs are not so historic

I'm hearing criticisms of the end to the two child limit, because it was done just to mollify Labour backbenchers, at a cost of £billions.

I remember another govt delivering a referendum on EU membership, just to mollify restive backbenchers. That's costing way, way more... A little perspective?

'Richardson warned that if “the Guardian proceeds to publish any allegation suggesting that Mr Farage engaged in, condoned, or led racist or antisemitic behaviour, or that such claims bear upon his present character or fitness for office, proceedings will be issued without further notice.”'

I am willing to bet this Farage story is triggering for many people with a protected characteristic. Reflecting on their school years is likely to bring up painful memories of being abused with no one protecting them. It won't cause the bystanders to reflect me thinks.
I haven't seen any yet but you could probably find a few contemporaries who didn't personally witness Farage being Farage at school. But there doesn't seem to be a single former pupil or teacher who find the descriptions of racism, anti-semitism & cruelty unfeasible. Shocked, I tell you...

What's shocking is how in an age of enlightenment about the impact of abuse on children well. Into adulthood that no one has expressed any surprise that the adults in the school appeared to let him act with impunity. It's time this myth that children don't harm other children is well & truly busted

Yes it does. I am tired of the Party that gave us years of austerity to no avail telling us now what will or won't work. 14 years of Tory rule no accountability. One year and a bit of Labour and they are responsible for the years of decline in living standards.
Badenoch says Budget can be summed up as ‘Labour are hiking taxes to pay for welfare.’
Sounds good to me! 🤷‍♀️

I actually really don't think it much matters that Farage was a racist idiot at school, really. What matters is how he a) reflects on that behaviour now, and b) what he's learned and c) done in the 40 years since.

And, well... a) Badly, b) Nothing and c) Been a fascist-enabling spiv.

When only one decent person tries to act. Good for @orynski.eu it may not have changed things there but at least you left with your integrity in tact.
I used to be a member of TrucknetUK, an internet forum for HGV drivers. Over the years I observed how it slowly turns into UKIP cesspit. When members started to be overtly racist, I tried to make admins act, but they saw nothing wrong with it, so I decided it's time to go. It was years ago now.

He could have done that. Many seasoned politicians would have done that but Reform are Trump light. They find journalists who interrogate them offensive.
Reform love free speech while being perpetually offended any time someone asks them a very basic question.

It's a curious paradox.

Why doesn't he just laugh and say, "Of course he isn't" instead of getting so cross.
‘Is Nigel Farage a Russian asset?’
‘Are you seriously asking me that?’

I wonder where this rabid individualism stems from????
I don't care for those who have no pride in their society as long as they are ok. What good is it to be alright jack if the country looks like poo! Where's the national pride in that?
Interesting discussion on the budget today.

There are folks (me included) who get the idea that if I am a bit more affluent I can contribute a bit more for the common good, and others who believe "I should only pay for stuff that directly benefits me".

@sarahowen.org.uk makes me extremely proud to be a Beds resident. This is totally in keeping with her approach.
I know who Nus Ghani MP is - not because we always agree - but because she’s been serving her constituency (as well as lewks) since 2015.

Who the hell is Lucy White?!

Ah, a quick google search reveals her as a rentagob for GB ‘news.’

I know which one is qualified to chair the budget debate.
