I wrote this back in March. Seven months ago. It is only more deeply true now. As it will be tomorrow. Canada isn't moving urgently enough to adjust to this new reality.

If you still wear a mask & take precautions to protect yourself and others from COVID-19/other infections:

Thank you for saving lives and for putting people before the status quo. Every time you wear a mask, test before/after going to crowded events, and stay home when sick, you make a difference.

An estimated 15.7 million workers use SNAP. Itโ€™s a lifeline for those in low-wage jobs.

Meanwhile, CEOs are paid 280x as much as the typical worker.

Donโ€™t be angry at workers for using food stamps.

Be angry at the corporations paying them so little that they need them.

Schizophrenia exists.

Mental illness exists.

Psychiatric medications can be life-saving.

Psychotherapy can be life-saving.

Don't let misinformed people like @profjohnread.bsky.social tell you otherwise.

Enough with the anti-psychiatry propaganda and stigma. โœŒ๏ธ

Co-sign strongly.

And kids should be allowed to use the restroom when they need to.

Which shouldnโ€™t be an outlandish statement yet here we are.
Tampons and pads should be in all public restrooms - ESPECIALLY schools. Stock them like toilet paper.

Scotland, New Zealand, even Kenya do it.

But not the USA, where men (and even some women) are so aggressively sexist that they fight AGAINST period products in schools.

Canadian provinces are doing this to us, right now, slowly destroying post-secondary education. Carney is about to do it to research too.
It's really incredible that the USA has absolutely wrecked itself on higher education, tourism and scientific research.

So much of American soft power is based on it, and they just keep punching themselves in the balls.
So many own goals.
Once again: higher ed is one of our most successful exports. We export more higher ed to China than soybeans. And yet Trump and the mini-Trumps are deliberately destroying the quality of our product

Uncertainty is a feature of science, not a flaw.
Admitting uncertainty isn't the same as pretending both sides are equal.
Populists exploit this nuance to sow doubt on issues like medicine, climate and vaccines.

Science thrives on openness to new evidence.
But that openness isnโ€™t a license to ignore consensus or amplify fringe claims.
The burden of proof lies with challengers, not the scientific mainstream.

โ€œSettledโ€ doesnโ€™t mean 100% certainty - it means overwhelming evidence.
The earth is round.
Vaccines save lives.
These arenโ€™t 50-50 debates.
Uncertainty shouldn't be an excuse for false balance.

This really is a shame.

In times like these we really should be commissioning more engaging, informative evidence-based shows, not fewer.
For 61 years the #BBCWorldService has been broadcasting the latest in science via its weekly Science in Action programme. That dies in the next half hour, with this final edition, reflecting on the fall in trust in expertise driven by malign interests over recent years.

My friend, the historian,
told me the students
in one of her seminars
have been conspiring
to all come to class
dressed up as her

if this was flattery or mockery,
she said she absolutely loves it
for it means
that her students will be masked.

Tim Mellon, Miriam Adelson, the Uihleins, Ken Griffin (Citadel) - all poured hundreds of millions into his campaign.

Qatar gifted him a luxury plane and invested billions in his ventures.

The list goes on and on.

Donald Trump is the most bought and paid for President in American history.

Tim Cook got him a gold brick.

Zuckerberg (& the dickbags above) all donated millions to his inauguration and demolition of the East Wing.

SARS-CoV-2 interferes with p53 signalilng.

That may not mean much to non-specialists, but as a PhD in that area, it's the biggest possible red flag, and the flag is also on fire.

We don't yet know how bad it'll be, but with public health asleep at the wheel (as usual), there's no real upper limit.
The worst part of the potential for COVID to cause cancer is that it's entirely predictable, but the medical policy types have to control everything, so they locked science out of the room and tried to wing it.
