Turns out that sound macroeconomic management promotes trust--and the lack of it does the opposite
An Old-Fashioned Cure for Fading Trust in Government
Across much of the industrial world, trust in government is low and declining. Why is this happening and why, exactly, does it matter? An unusually thorough new study looks at these questions and finds answers that are somewhat unexpected and, in one way, more disturbing than you might have guessed.

Cruelty is anhedonic. It rarely delivers the euphoria promised because, in the abstract, what feels righteous and joyful inevitably reveals itself to be sordid and small. Then it's "No not like that". "No not enough". "No the real battle, the forever war to make this feel good starts now". Forever.
Note how these awful people are getting exactly the exclusions of children that they demanded and *that still isn’t enough for them*: they demand everyone be delighted about it and kiss their arses for being brilliant.

Yesterday the President fell asleep, yet again, during a televised fake Cabinet meeting staged so that each of his courtiers could heap praise on him, praise for which he couldn't stay conscious. He woke up just long enough to spew racism. Why is this not being treated as an emergency? >

Easily the best book from 2025 I’ve read this year, essential reading on both the cruel history of housing policy in this country and the lived reality for families who can no longer afford the basics of social reproduction.
Absolutely stunned and honored to see THERE IS NO PLACE FOR US on this list.

I'm grateful beyond words to the five families who trusted me with their stories and allowed me to witness their struggle to secure a home.

America does not have capital punishment for selling or smuggling drugs and none of these people were arrested or tried. There could have been mountains of cocaine in open view on the deck of the boats and it still would have been murder of unarmed civilians.
Rand Paul just posted this letter from the Coast Guard confirming that 1/4 of the boats they stop carry no contraband. The likelihood that Hegseth & Bradley ordered the murder of innocent civilians is very high.

I recall Truman having views on where the buck stops.

Anyway, isn’t this administration all about the “unitary executive?”

White House justifies strikes on boat survivors, but it's unclear where buck stops
In the face of charges that these strikes amount to execution without trial, the White House is sending a confusing message about who exactly gave each order to use deadly force.

America is extraordinarily radical in that there are tons of different ethnic groups here, and we not only generally get along with each other, but the law treats us all equal equally, and we all do the same shit like eat fried butter.

What MAGA dares to ask is: what if we didn’t
Anyway the best I've ever felt about America was me (Jewish) standing in line with my friend and her daughter (Irish and Latina) to pet a baby lamb at the Minnesota State Fair alongside a hijabi Black woman and her daughter, an East Asian family, an African-American family, and some white people.

trump fucked over the contractors who demolished the East Wing of the White House and his precious ballroom may never be built because he can’t agree with architects about what is feasible to build. So, 123 years of history turned to rubble for NOTHING. 🤬

Where are all those "but academic freedom!" folks? Harper's Letter signatories? What's up?
This is insane. Any material a prof thinks is necessary but isn’t for formal licensing has to get the signoff of the chair, then dean, then provost?

This is an absolutely mockery of academic freedom.

I feel like Texas Tech HAS to lose its accreditation for this, no? It’s preposterous.
TX Tech has a flow chat for guidance on what can be taught in the university system. Two things:
1. Very little content seems to be permitted. This is partisan control of the curriculum.
2. I would not enjoy teaching under these conditions, but I really would not want to be a Chair or Dean.
