Wisdom from Walrus: A great way to commemorate Indigenous People's Day is to help Indigenous People when disaster strikes.
Alaska got slammed again so if you have a few clams you can chip in, please help.

Western Alaska was hit hard by the recent storms. Houses floated away in Kipnuk, houses flipped over, people lost everything from the flooding that came with the storms. Please donate if you can. This group has a long history of supporting AK communities.

“News flavored content.”

It’s so perfect I could die.
cooperlund.online
I've been blaming memes for this, and I think it fits. A lot of the angriest people out there aren't actually consuming news, they're consuming news-flavored content, and the content is a funhouse mirror version of reality that they're mistaking for being real.

Speaking of which - whether it's for your Indigenous People's Day Donations OR because you're part of the #UglyDogs - Dr. Kat is from Kotzebue and I trust her recommendation for what will get resources there.

Red-breasted merganser watercolor comic, sorry had to after seeing bsky.app/profile/hibb...
Watercolor sketch: a male red-breasted merganser does the courtship dance of sticking his butt out of the water and looking weird (see real-life red-breasted merganser mating dance). Says: Huhhhughhuh s'up ladies, huhuhuh.
A group of female mergansers on rocks are watching. First one: Ugh. Second one: Creep.
Third one is gawking in delight and her tail feathers are fanning like crazy trying to cool her down.

Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day
The Death of Captain Cook.
An unfinished painting showing the death of Captain James Cook, at Kealakekua Bay, Hawaii, on 14 February 1779 at the hands of an incensed crowd, during his third Pacific voyage in the ships 'Resolution' and 'Discovery', 1776-80.
Captain Cook is shown lying on the ground in the centre foreground of the painting, wearing a blue uniform coat and white breeches. He lies on his right side at the water's edge, still clutching his musket (which was in fact double-barrelled). The Hawaiians are mainly unclothed and some wear head dresses. Most of the figures are very sketchy and only four are in a completed state. The marine on the left running into the water, the Islander stabbing the prostrate Cook, the chief with the cloak and headdress to his right and, to the right of him, the dead Hawaiian. Even Cook is unfinished. The terrain and coastline have been sketched with a bay visible in the distance and fighting continuing on a hill on the left and a rise in the land on the right.

Border Patrol “attempted to arrest a plumber working inside a Logan Heights home but left empty-handed after the homeowner refused them entry.

The homeowner told agents she would not allow them inside because the warrant they presented did not include her address and lacked a judge's signature.”
Federal immigration operations target San Diego neighborhoods, sparking community resistance
Federal immigration agents conducted operations in Logan Heights and Southeast San Diego on Friday, with community members capturing footage of the enforcement actions.

the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.

Lmao is this supposed to be a bad thing?
A tweet from Bari Weiss that says “"It's shaken me to my core," a lieutenant said of Mamdani's unexpected victory in June. "The absolute dread I feel is palpable.
"
Today in @TheFP our @Olivia_Reingold talks to the cops who say they will walk if Zohran Mamdani is elected in November:”

When I hear crap like this I think back to my local crackpot city councillors who'd defend endless police budget increases with, "But what about all the unreported crimes?"
atrupar.com
WELKER: Are you looking at invoking the Insurrection Act?

VANCE: We have to remember we are talking about this bc crime has gotten out of control

W: Crime is down in both Chicago & Portland

V: Crime is down bc they are so overwhelmed at the local level they are not even keeping stats properly

Enjoyed the New Yorker interview with Tim Curry, a free-wheeling conversation in which there were several sensitive questions about his paralyzing stroke. But oh my goodness, why was there no follow-up at all to this staggering answer? www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
Screenshot of text from the interview:

You’ve always been an incredibly physical performer: your strut during “Sweet Transvestite” in “Rocky Horror,” or the way you run around unfurling the mystery at the end of “Clue.” Do you still feel that in your body? Does that live somewhere in you still?

I think it does, but it’s angry. My mobility is angry to get out. But it’s not happened yet. I do a certain amount of physical therapy. I did a whole bunch of it at Cedars-Sinai, and I got very close, I think, to walking. That was tantalizing. For insurance reasons, I had to withdraw. And I have a visiting physical therapist now, but I can only really do exercises from my bed, which is pretty pathetic. It’s not going to get me walking, I don’t believe.

[I have underlined the sentence "For insurance reasons, I had to withdraw."]

Gang, re: a Qatari presence in Idaho, may I recommend that you watch this from V Spehar/Under the Desk News + the one I linked immediately following it.

tl;dr
No, Qatar is not building a base in Idaho.
emilylhauser.bsky.social
A facility isn't a base - if I understand correctly, there was an agreement that Qatari pilots would come here for training on planes they're getting from us; a facility will be built to house them and their families while they're here for that training.

In 2004, Parisian police were conducting a training exercise in the french catacombs and found, after moving past a desk and a tape playing audio of snarling dogs, a fully functional movie theater and bar. When they returned 3 days later, the equipment was gone, with a note: “Do not try to find us.”
Members of the force's sports squad, responsible
- among other tasks - for policing the 170 miles of tunnels, caves, galleries and catacombs that underlie large parts of Paris, stumbled on the complex while on a training exercise beneath the Palais de Chaillot, across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower.
After entering the network through a drain next to the Trocadero, the officers came across a tarpaulin marked: Building site, No access.
Behind that, a tunnel held a desk and a closed-circuit TV camera set to automatically record images of anyone passing. The mechanism also triggered a tape of dogs barking, "clearly designed to frighten people off," the spokesman said.
Further along, the tunnel opened into a vast 400 sq metre cave some 18m underground, "like an underground amphitheatre, with terraces cut into the rock and chairs". There the police found a full-sized cinema screen, projection equipment, and tapes of a wide variety of films, including 1950s film noir classics and more recent thrillers. None of the films were banned or even offensive, the spokesman said.
A smaller cave next door had been turned into an informal restaurant and bar. "There were bottles of whisky and other spirits behind a bar, tables and chairs, a pressure-cooker for making couscous," the spokesman said.
"The whole thing ran off a professionally installed electricity system and there were at least three phone lines down there."
Three days later, when the police returned accompanied by experts from the French electricity board to see where the power was coming from, the phone and electricity lines had been cut and a note was lying in the middle of the floor: "Do not," it said, "try to find us."
