You're the only one saying that's the rationalization. I've given several others that are not ridiculous. I'm sure this has or will be tested in court at some point.

Also, he resigned in 2019 and he's currently on trial because he was such a shitty chancellor. LOL If his ridiculous comment is the crux of your argument, I'm not sure you have one.

And in any case, anyone reading this now has enough info to decide what they want to believe, so 🫡
miscelena.bsky.social
Yeah, I think that chancellor was being facetious with you. Why, I can't imagine.
miscelena.bsky.social
I would be losing my bloody mind if that were my son. At this point it seems safe to say that all police everywhere should be assumed to be collaborators. They're not reliable help in any situation, and I can no longer fully trust people who don't understand this.

Whistling when ICE is about to kidnap someone for no reason is incredibly effective. They know what they are doing is wrong and will scatter in the wind when too many witnesses gather.

This week in 1988: 1,000+ ACT UP demonstrators shut down the FDA headquarters, demanding (and eventually winning) action on developing HIV/AIDS treatments. ACT UP's militant and creative actions always included powerful visual artwork, and paved the way for movements in the decades to come.
A photograph from the 1988 ACT UP demonstration outside the FDA. Many people are participating in a die-in on the front steps, holding mock tombstones with messages like "RIP - killed by the FDA" and "Dead from lack of drugs." A line of police officers (some with classic 80s mustaches) wearing riot helmets stands between them and the building; one cop wearing white gloves is walking through the demonstrators. Affixed to the 2nd story windows of the building is a series of posters and a large blank banner reading Silence = Death.

The sign isn't near a roof so I don't see how this is relevant to the convo. There are safer and less safe places for protesting, even if using a roof as an example is indeed ridiculous. Narrow areas, ones that block entrances/exits (etc) are perfectly reasonable places to put these signs. 🤷‍♀️

My many-times ggf was from Nijmegen (130km away) but was across the ocean in New Amsterdam by 1654; I find myself wondering if/when and how news of this event would have reached him.

Also, the chancellor of the College of San Mateo appears to use she/her pronouns?
miscelena.bsky.social
Sorry, I'm confused: Was someone trying to stage a protest on a roof at the college of San Mateo and denied permission? And what's that got to do with the OPs sign?

OR - if anyone wants to hear me out here - it *COULD* be a policy related to people being crushed when large crowds of protestors panic, even outdoors. If there's a safer space for protesting on campus, this sign might just be directing them elsewhere. Vilifying the Facilities department is weird.
miscelena.bsky.social
I felt like reading the actual policy made that clear, but everyone's so reactive lately, I give up. Not every policy or Facilites department supports fascism & yes, people have been crushed during protests, even in outdoor spaces. It really does feel like people are angry at the wrong thing here.🤷‍♀️
miscelena.bsky.social
Depends on the exits from that "open space". Read a little bit more on fire history, maybe, but I'm blocking this entire conversation because apparently pointing out that not every Facilities department is supporting fascists is controversial and it's not even my job anymore so carry on.
miscelena.bsky.social
And that's what I was arguing: the sign itself is reasonable, it's the placement of it that is either reasonable or not. 🤷‍♀️
miscelena.bsky.social
Then *that* is the context that needed: this space is likely not regulated by a building code if gathering has formerly been allowed and now is not, without any legal backing or physical renovation driving the change.

That's a different thing than the sign in general being a problem.
miscelena.bsky.social
Because I think a lot of people could die in a fire -literally- if a lot of people gather in a space where gathering isn't permitted. That's literally been my job, to design policies and be responsible for implementing code (law) for public safety. 🤷‍♀️
miscelena.bsky.social
Yeah, without more context of where the sign is posted, it's impossible to say if it's reasonable or not.
miscelena.bsky.social
Policies are often based on law. In this case, as someone who worked in facilities, I suspect this is based on building codes. A policy to ensure users of the space remain complaint with the law. That's what policies are for?
miscelena.bsky.social
It's a policy potentially based on a govt regulation. Read the link to the policy.
miscelena.bsky.social
Where is it? It looks to be on a path, not, for instance, in the middle of a lawn. Is it at an entrance that could be blocked by a crowd, resulting in difficulty exiting? If the building were burning, would a crowd there endanger people trying to get out?
miscelena.bsky.social
*formerly.... but formerly formally. LOL
miscelena.bsky.social
As someone formally in Facilities work, it looks reasonable to me. Building/fire/safety codes exist. Policies are written to maintain compliance. (Cafeterias get max occupancy signs.) If this is an area not compliant for gatherings, this is a rational sign explaining "don't gather here". 🤷‍♀️
