Learned that an anonymous outside expert on submersibles did an interview with the OceanGate Titan investigation, and they released a transcript, with all the names redacted. The first line of his first answer? "I'm sure you're familiar with my film Titanic."

11 Q. So how did you get yourself started into submersible
12 operations?
13
A.
Well, I'm sure you're familiar with my film Titanic.
When I
14
set down the path to make that film, the first thing that I did
15
was arrange to be introduced to the head of the submersible
16
program at the P.P. Shirshov Institute in Moscow, a guy named

Professor
I. I did that through a mutual friend
18
of ours, a guy named
, who is one of the preeminent
underwater cinematographers in the world. And had been on a
20
submersible expedition out to Titanic the previous year with the
21
Russians. And that was organized by a Canadian company that was
22 doing an IMAX film which was released under the title Titanica.
lol that's how i learned too

wrote up a bit of info on a less common US revision of Micro Machines for the NES, featuring a pretty nasty bug, discovered just a little too late and then worked around by using a PLD to patch a single *bit*. this is what day one patches looked like in 1991!
front view of a NES cartridge PCB, featuring ROM, RAM, and two logic chips
i have another thing planned but this one looked fun lol
im stealing an idea from geekcritique:
give me 5 dollars or more and ill make a very short video essay about your question or topic

The president keeps talking about how he knows he is going to hell and the material pleasures of life are just a balm for a wound growing deeper by the day. Which could be good or bad. It's impossible to say.
i guess it's a self-selection situation innit? you're not gonna hear from the people that seclude themselves

but also this excerpt goes hard:
Gender becomes a verb.
again, from 1997.
an excerpt from Shannon McRae's 1997 essay "Flesh Made Word: Sex, Text, and The Virtual Body" which reads as follows:
If boys can be girls and straights can be queers and dykes can be fags and two lesbian lovers can turn out to both be men in real life, then "straight" or "queer," "male" or "female" become unreliable as markers of identity.
It is not so much that gender roles or sexual preferences actually change as that cross-gender role play troubles the link between gender and desire, from which we, usually unquestioningly, construct our identities as sexual beings.
Gender becomes a verb, not a noun, a position to occupy rather than a fixed role.
In many cases, gender becomes the effect that one individual can have upon another.
give it a re-read: it's a really good essay??? it describes the experience ppl had in the 90s of various types of sexual RP, and how that could be (1.) real to them and (2.) a way to explore their sexuality. radical stuff from 30 years ago.
but also i feel weird bc i dont see myself in this picture
noteably, this dial has multiaxial rotation
trying to read a 1997 essay about cybersex and realizing that i'm way out of my depth bc i dont even understand 2025 regular sex
lemon flavored tums is just one of many examples of the excess size of humanity's hubris

i kinda love this tho? it feels like a parody of itself. it personifies the demographics that nintendo and sega were targeting at the time, reinforcing and humanizing a narrative thats still seen today. they create a gradient of "how serious are games" and put themselves at the "very" end, past sega
story: I had a collection of some mangled renditions of SMB 1-1 BGM that id been making just because they're funny.
generating some janky ai marios for the album art crossed my mind but didn't feel right, even 4 years ago.
so i drew the worst mario i could.
that decision feels better every day.
a very bad drawing of Mario with the text "uhhh..... OF COURSE i remember how mario goes, its definitely exactly... um. or like. hmm... ok. hold on. thinking emoji." in the style of the classic black box NES artwork

Losing my mind and what look like video game assets but instead were used to justify war crimes and genocide in the real world
NEW: Since October 2023, the IDF Spokesperson's Unit has released dozens of 3D animations illustrating alleged Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iranian sites

The style is unmistakable: satellite zoom-ins, black & white wireframes, and red-textured houses - a new visual language of war.Our analysis of 43 official IDF videos found recycled 3D environments, spatial inaccuracies, and assets lifted from unrelated artists and institutions. We traced over 30 unique assets to Washington-based 3D creator Ian Hubert, who makes bespoke models created for his sci-fi project Dynamo Dream, available to his Patreon subscribers.

Fascinating work here tracing how the IDF recycled 3D assets from a cyberpunk sci-fi art project, the Scottish Maritime Museum and elsewhere to populate its widely-seen models of supposed enemy locations in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran. One of the most infamous, the alleged underground Hamas command center at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, used to justify an unprecedented assault on the biggest medical center in Gaza, was actually an animation the IDF had used the previous year, saying at the time it was a tunnel beneath a UN school.
a parent learning from their kid? our top scientists have long said this couldn't be done. we're entering uncharted territories
