At Anime Fest she spoke about how she was on the edge of giving up on the industry when her pitch for Yuri on Ice was accepted. About how she fought with the producers. I can only assume her experience with Ice Adolescence pushed her over that edge.

I have a similar suspicion. Having actually sat in a room and spoken with her face to face, been to panels, and read interviews, my impression is that she's fought like hell to be allowed to let her distinct creative voice shine through.

It's taken a couple of days to really gather my thoughts on this, but MAPPA destroying Sayo Yamamoto as they have is something I'll never be able to reconcile. She was a brilliant creator who deserved the world, but was ground into paste by The Anime Factory.

I pray for Manabu Otsuka's downfall.

This is something fans are desperate to ask about. The planned movie, ICE ADOLESCENCE, was officially cancelled by MAPPA, which left many fans heartbroken as they loved the series dearly. We know this is a sensitive topic, and you may not be able to discuss it, but fans would be incredibly grateful for any insight you could offer as to what went wrong or why the movie was ultimately cancelled.

Hideo Katsumata: I can’t talk about the details, as that includes some very private matters. But if you ask whether it’s a creative or business issue, the reasons stem from the creative side. The main reason is that it couldn’t be made due to creative reasons. Since it was an original animation, the people involved—including the creators and the animation studio, MAPPA… among the creators, on the creative side, a situation arose where it just became impossible to proceed with production.

Taking about boycotting, I want to bring back the issue to anime studies for a minute. Back in 2019, I was offered to review "The Anime Boom" (2017) by Michal Daliot-Bul and Nissim Otmazgin. On page xii, it reads: "The research for this book was generously funded by the Israel Science Foundation."
