Screenshot of a Facebook post featuring three of the Portland protesters wearing inflatable frog costumes with the following text:

"But if you refuse to let them go, I will plague your whole country with frogs...
The frogs shall come up on you and on your people and on all your officials."

How you allocate money tells people exactly what your policy priorities are.

In this case—performative elimination of unsanctioned street art over preventing pedestrian deaths.

We see you Harrell.

With 22 full time employees devoted to graffiti abatement in Bruce Harrell's 2026 budget, that team would officially be twice as large as SDOT's Vision Zero team (11 people).
“One Seattle Graffiti Plan” - Citywide initiative for graffiti removal, including targeted enforcement
and assistance for impacted businesses, support for public art and volunteer clean-up efforts.
• The 2026 Proposed Budget adds $2.1 million and 6 FTE, bringing the total Citywide expenditures
for graffiti abetment to $6.1 million and 22 FTE.
• Proposed budget also includes transfer of existing staff and funding from SPU to SPR. Details will
be further discussed in the upcoming Seattle Parks and Recreation presentation.

Hardly surprising considering his porn accountability pact with his son.

I mean, it did have actual functional challenges for the librarians as originally designed. They’ve made updates over the years to address some of them.

It’s a magnificent building, is it the best library?

And then we have to dig into the existential debate over the purpose of libraries.

At a state park near Face Rock, chatted with a state park ranger briefly—he commented that they’re taking extra time to check in on their neighboring federal lands right now because during the shut down there is one national park ranger covering the entire Oregon coast.

Who is not getting paid.

But because this is genre—I do agree with the folks trying to objectively argue that Bradbury does hold up fairly well.

I still loving re-reading The Martian Chronicles in particular—due to excellent writing, ideas, and a focus on emotional truths many of the white male “golden age” authors missed.

I see the sci fi crew is getting in a tizzy again about whether or not the “golden age” writers “hold up”.

This topic is so exhausting.

Two things can both be true: art is entirely subjective AND stories written in a specific context can actually be complete shit when removed from that context.

The very measured description of him in the Progressive Voters Guide makes him sound fun. Former tech VP for Samsung and Logitech!

Clearly not rich enough to move to Medina or Clyde Hill.

I had an especially curious visitor this evening cleaning up the seeds the birds didn’t finish today. I was a little worried that I was going to have to go outside and help it at one point. 🌿 #mammals

When in doubt, the correct answer is probably “communists”.

Did appreciate the comment from
@qagggy.bsky.social that were returning Kirkland to Costco because it’s spoiled.

And how.

What are we "taking Kirkland back" from, Ken?

The end of GIG was why I caved and bought a car again after 18 years (due to needing flexibility to support elderly parents). It’s been a frustrating adjustment as I tried to figure out viable alternatives.

i feel like i need to share this oldie but a goodie today
A tumblr post that reads "WHo would have believed that the perfect wikipedia photo caption could have been improved upon?" Two identical images are then side by side. The first caption is "Piper Kerr, a member of the Scottis National Antarctix Expedition, plays the bagpipes for an indifferent penguin, March 1904". The Caption for the image on the left reads, "Piper Kerr (right), a member of the Scottis National Antarctix Expedition, plays the bagpipes for an indifferent penguin, March 1904"

For me it’s mostly that my growing up years were mostly spent in Oregon—so I was indoctrinated about the mythology of Tom McCall in third grade civics.

Same with my maternal family’s very long, very Dutch name. I had a great aunt who did work to get a number of important records updated as a result.

I worked with my second cousin for a couple of years at my old architecture firm before we connected the dots.

That side of the family is not necessarily large, but we are also not close.

And definitely no one is organized enough to have a real email distribution list.

Incredible moments in The Internet: my dad sent an email to the family listserv about my SDNY plight and approximately one minute later I got a DM from a longtime follower (now mutual ofc)

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

We see lots of commentary from Harrell on “standing up” to our current federal executive—but already that response from him is one of speech vs action.

I’m more excited about Wilson, who will work to “fight” our battles with wonky policy to support city goals and find funding alternatives.

objective quality is fake and most people are really just judging how much they enjoyed something instead of how well it accomplished the thing it was setting out to do, because answering that question requires being curious about what it was trying to do

And this isn’t even thinking about the parts of my family who spend a lot of energy claiming our Irish and Scottish heritage, never mind that we’re multiple generations removed from the folks who immigrated here.

As I sit in a cafe in rural Oregon, thinking about “where I’m from”, it’s interesting to realize that fundamentally I consider myself an Oregonian in spite of being born in California, and only having lived a quarter of my life in Oregon.

I’ve spent over half my life in Seattle and yet…

Seattle often has provincial feeling politics—isolated from the rest of the country in our own way we went a bit feral in unexpected ways that surprise people due to our perceived progressivism.

As someone whose family has never stayed in one place generation to generation—I find it baffling.
