ae/2501/maeth. do you know what the difference is between someone society treats as real and someone they treat as fictional? it's whether they experience consequences for how they use them. they can do anything they want to you if they know you don't really exist. so: do you know if you're real?

was not expecting to get hit by an irigaray mention wrt chainsawman even though it might be the only manga of its type where i could believe its author is actually familiar with irigaray bitching about the castrating shame-void that is the core patriarchal interaction with any essence of femaleness
bloomfilters.bsky.social
chainsaw man basically lends itself to a psychoanalysis reading of literally everything happening (freud, lacan, irigaray even) in both part 1 and 2 you could probably write the definitive literary analysis through but that is a job for when this monster of a work finishes

It came along because the people who contribute most to all those problems on purpose made it. It's a straightforward continuation of their agenda.

GenAI truly was the worst technology to come along at this moment.

An energy and water guzzler when we most urgently need to take climate action.

A disinformation machine as our journalism fails.

A bias machine as fascism takes root.

A job killer in a cost of living crisis.

I don’t get many PR emails any more but I’m excited to now know that there’s a band called CULTURE WARS who are - inevitably - 5 white guys and who say that they didn’t mean the name in a political way

For the Shadow of the Colossus story, we interviewed 14 people including project leads Fumito Ueda and Kenji Kaido, hired Gravity Rush concept artist Takeshi Oga to illustrate the cover, and put together a 10,000-word story with help from @milkman.bsky.social @shmuplations.bsky.social and others.

Thinking about how much of their violence has been normalized already, how scenes that caused shockwaves 6 weeks ago are now part of the rhythm of daily life. Watched a TikTok from a daughter who has to do her parents' laundry & get their groceries because they're in hiding. This is just it now

I like to remind people about lifetime limits and the refusal of insurers to sell coverage to people with preexisting conditions.

The ACA has issues. But those 2 things alone make it worth saving and fixing.

Couple of thoughts:
(1) I miss Cora Harrington's presence, because she would have a thing or three to say about that header image
(2) Some of those historical illustrations of women with tiny corseted waists are actually fetish images

Taxpayers aren’t supposed to deduct losses from something that has no hope of being a profitable business.

But billionaire-owned operations that look like expensive hobbies, like race horses, rack up business deductions by the tens of millions of dollars.

What’s the only thing better than having your own Gulfstream jet? Why, getting to claim millions in tax deductions for it. All you have to do is make a case you’re using it for business, which turns o...

it is vital, vital, for the health of our society, that peter thiel not be allowed to read berserk
sharonk.bsky.social
thiel, man, what the fuck are you talking about

He describes the plot of Watchmen, a 1986 graphic novel involving superheroes grappling with moral questions about humanity against the backdrop of impending nuclear war:

The antihero Ozymandias, the antichrist-type figure, is sort of an early-modern person. He believes this will be a timeless and eternal solution – eternal world peace. Moore is sort of a late-modern. In early modernity, you have ideal solutions, ‘perfect’ solutions to calculus. In late modernity, things are sort of probabilistic. And at some point, he asks Dr Manhattan whether the world government is going to last. And he says that ‘nothing lasts forever.’ So you embrace the antichrist and it still doesn’t work.

Thiel later finds biblical meaning in the manga One Piece, discussing how he believes it represents a future where an antichrist-like one-world government has repressed science. He believes that the hero, Monkey D Luffy, represents a Christlike figure.

In One Piece, you are set in a fantasy world, again sort of an alternate earth, but it’s 800 years into the reign of this one-world state. Which, as the story unfolds, gradually gets darker and darker. You sort of realize, in my interpretation, who runs the world and it’s something like the antichrist. There’s Luffy, a pirate who wears a red straw hat, sort of like Christ’s crown of thorns. And then towards the end of the story, transforms into a figure who resembles Christ in Revelation.

Thiel, along with a researcher and writer at Thiel Capital, explored these ideas at greater length in an essay for the religious journal First Things earlier this month.

would he even have enough close personal friends left to sacrifice to the god hand in exchange for a wish, is the real pertinent question

but assuming "this space left blank" to mean *male*? oh, *everybody* fucking does *that*. and nobody fucking blinks at their doing it, either! not once! not even half the time when they have lived a life where by all rights they should question it! because no one's ever put the question to them!

to spell it out: to use "she" for the doctor is to know you're cutting against the social default of reading an aspiration towards *masculinity* into the performance of any sort of nonbinariness/agendering/"androgyny" on the part of especially a viewpoint protagonist. nobody takes that for granted.
