It's why the scariest book I've ever read is House of Leaves. It needs interaction, you're flipping the pages around, reading things in circles, hoping and swapping and trying to actually engage in a way that is separate from just *reading* the bloody thing.

It's why, for me, video games can often have the most effective visceral scares, the ones you feel in your gut. Because *you* interact with the sights and sounds you are experiencing, even more than film.

Not to say games live up to the scope they're given, as video game storytelling is often shit.

Of the common media used for horror storytelling, fiction is easily the weakest due to its very format.

The method of contact is singular, as is the method of control for the creator, compared to the sight and sound and time control of film.
