This is a good question and something that sounds fun to write about, so I'm going to do a thread and periodically add to it. I argue that what a lot of people refer to (and unfairly dismiss) as "modern Simpsons" is often a decade or more out of date, and the show has turned a corner in recent years

"... the best advice I have to give is to ask: 'in what way is this argument founded in the premise that some people matter and other people don't?'"

Today I wrote about a general tendency to accept atrocious premises, and the need to reject fascism's false choices in order to find expansive and imaginative paths forward.

Breaking the premise, embracing the obstacles, pursing everything.

There Is No Trolley Problem
We actually aren't constrained into atrocious premises by thought exercises. Obstacles are a reason to fight, not an excuse to quit. Our friends and neighbors aren't distractions..

Palestine’s most popular leader, Marwan Barghouti, was beaten unconscious and has his ribs broken by Israeli prison guards and his family fears for his life, his son has said, citing evidence given by former Palestinian detainees released this week as part of the ceasefire deal.

NEW SOLUTIONS TO THE TROLLEY CAR PROBLEM

By me and @postcardsbybecky.bsky.social

Read more cartoons! #PoliCartoon
Help us make more! patreon.com/barry
This cartoon has four panels. Each panel shows a different scene with one character in it. And each panel has a caption, in large letters, at the top. A large caption over the top of the entire strip says NEW SOLUTIONS TO THE TROLLEY CAR PROBLEM.

PANEL ONE

CAPTION: REPUBLICANS

A smiling, well-dressed woman with long blonde hair stands behind a podium, gesturing to indicate a trolley car parked behind her. The trolley car is gory with blood spattered all over the front, and we can see bodies under the car.

WOMAN: Cleaning blood off a trolley car is expensive! That's why we're proposing tax breaks for trolley car companies!

PANEL TWO

CAPTION: LIBERTARIANS

A man with a very thick orange beard, wearing a green knit cap and a plaid shirt, is sitting in his armchair at home and speaking directly to us, with an intense expression. He's holding a joint in one hand and raising his I'm-making-an-important-point-now-forefinger with the other. Next to him one one side are a bunch of LP records stored in milk cartons; on the other side is a side table with a bottle of whisky, a whisky glass, and a thick book.

MAN: Trolley car companies need freedom to choose who to run over without bureaucrats getting in the way! Deregulate now!

PANEL THREE

CAPTION: DEMOCRATS

This is the same scene as panel one, but now a frightened looking old man, wearing huge glasses, a jacket and a bow tie, is behind the podium. He is shaking and sweating a bit as he talks to us. His dialogue is split into three balloons.

MAN: Something must be done! Er, someday. Maybe. If no one disagrees. Gotta stay bipartisan!

PANEL FOUR

CAPTION: TERFs

A woman wearing a blue pantsuit, and with nicely-done short white hair, is sitting on a park bench, looking thoughtful.

WOMAN (thought): One person's life versus six people's lives... Hmmm. Which choice hurts more trans people?

Amazing how the word "genocide" suddenly didn't seem like such a self-evidently ridiculous exaggeration to them after inauguration day. What a difference a day makes

Man I've seen people try to use her stated ignorance as a way to defend her-like "Oh maybe we're overreacting all these actors can't POSSIBLY know" but her response now I've seen the clip is. Fucking terrible
ladyemily.nebula.tv
The thing that gets me about actors responding like this whenever they’re asking about JKR is that they always say “we need to learn to agree to disagree ^_^” as if trans people are the ones leading the campaign, when we’re just trying to live our lives while JKR posts about trans hate 24/7

some colleagues have suggested to me that shame is irrelevant because the people on the "other side" don't know or care what "we" (on whatever "this side") think of them. I have...not gotten that impression

If you identify the genesis of US fascism as Trump’s entrance into politics, your analysis will fail every time. Fascism didn’t come to the US—it was born here! In the garrison-colonies of the British and Spanish, in the genocidal westward expansion, in the slave ships bringing misery and wealth.

So the "next frontier" is that they will keep kidnapping our neighbors, terrorizing our communities, and pulling guns on us in the street, but Dems will fight for them to be unmasked while doing it? I bet they'll just put those gas masks on a little more often. They love gassing our neighborhoods.
gregsargent.bsky.social
This is good: Rep Eric Swalwell tells me House Dems are now discussing making an end to mask-wearing a precondition for ICE funding.

"When we are in the majority, the masks are coming off," he says.

This is the next frontier in anti-Trump resistance.

There’s one simple pledge Democrats can make to voters about ICE that’s easy to understand and will have broad support.

Too many people say "doing what you can to avoid spreading covid" and mean "staying home when I don't feel well enough to leave the house anyway." They don't usually even mean masking the whole time they're covid positive. It's exhausting.
juliadoubleday.bsky.social
“Doing what you can to avoid spreading it to other people” is masking , until we have clean air - and in the meantime , you all need to be advocating for clean air, which none of you are showing the urgency around when you fail to mask.
40%+ of Covid cases are asymp and Covid disables people

People continue to call COVID advocates’ pleas for masking “unreasonable”.

Yet people who’ve already been disabled by COVID have no choice but to live with the “unreasonable” burdens of constant COVID safety.

Long COVID patients are constantly harangued about our requests for COVID safety. Yet what we're asking for is far less than what we're called on to do to survive.

It's downright bizarre from people who consider themselves liberals or leftists
walkerbragman.bsky.social
I don’t understand the folks who act like being asked to wear a mask in indoor public spaces is such a grievous burden.

We all have to use the space. Your cold/flu/COVID/misc. virus might not be a big deal for you, but you don’t know which people around you it will be a big deal for.

So mask…

I view masking the same way I view washing my hands after using the bathroom: It’s a very small sacrifice I make to not get sick and not get other people sick.

I mean, I’d love it if we required indoor air filtration in public-facing buildings bc it takes the burden off the individual.

Alas…
joadsprocket.bsky.social
I am not interested in living in a society of Universal Public Masking and neither are most people. This ask is not reasonable, and the invocation of solidarity in service of it is ridiculous.

it is not enough to be in charge, or even feared, they must be adored
