donald trump holds only two principled position: that neither corruption nor rape should be crimes
I’m very skeptical of this — not because President Trump isn’t willing to grant pardons and commutations easily, but because there is zero interest from his base in this, and he has nothing to gain from doing it.

And here come the “he’s trying to distract,” replies.

The Democrats need to get a hell of a lot of cameras on the White House and plaster the photos everywhere. It's not just the brazen symbol of a megalomaniac destroying national heritage; it's happening during a government shutdown when ordinary people aren't getting paid. Make every American see it.
Picard during The Drumhead is peak liberalism (affectionate). But Picard during The Defector seems like the best place to be. Considered, thoughtful, always aware of the stakes, able to tell people exactly who they are, ready to fight, planning ahead for that fight, ready to throw vicious punches.
He's doing all of this while the government has been shut down to protect him from being definitively identified as a pedophile.

I think we're all in a holodeck simulation, actually.
This photo accompanying a news story about the heist at the Louvre is perfection.
Just constantly, reflexively saying he's going to use state force against people exercising their rights.
He's trying to harm his Vice President for old times' sake. Just a trip down memory lane.
The only science fiction stories that can reliably forecast the future are bleak satires.
Science fiction is a poor guide to the future because no author is willing to make their stories as stupid, as amazingly, idiotically, rock-stupid moronic, as what actually ends up happening.

People don't need to be shamed for things that don't matter.
Being obsessed with cringe, cringe-watching, cringe-mocking, and other cultural policing is part of the reason why we're as bad off as we are right now.

seems that RFK is clearing the path for his CDC to do tuskegee syphillis experiments as a matter of course. in other news, RFK is a genuine monster who relishes in the pain and suffering of those he feels he has control or dominion over
RFK is undoing human subjects protections so he can conduct placebo trials of vaccines. That means infecting people knowingly. I wonder who will “volunteer” for these trials? If history is any guide, a lot of incarcerated and other powerless people.
Dismantling the Institutional Review Board (IRB), that oversees all human subjects research, is bad. Really bad.

This is just the NYT's way of doing a poop spray video, sure it looks a little different but the sentiment towards the protesters is the same
So this is what's above the fold in today's NYT, while the protests get two photos below the fold and a piece on A23. I know I shouldn't be surprised at this point, but damn.

I suppose I have to do the social media engagement thing since it's basically part of marketing yourself for a job now.

Hi, political scientist here. It's generally considered a diplomatic faux pas to bomb your allies then call them crackheads when they complain.

Happy Commodore Jones Day! On this date in 1842, Commodore Jones of the United States Navy, acting on a rumor of war, took over the capital of Mexican California and gave it back after a day. This act of mistaken conquest is given a comic twist in my novel The Master of Monterey. #booksky

Read the whole things, but some highlights:
- Their new median estimate is *5.5 million* people protested yday
- protest levels are 4x what they were in Trump's first term
- at least 12.8 million people, or 3.7% of the population, have demonstrated against the president since he took office
Good evening. We estimate that between 4.2 and 7.6 million people turned out for the No Kings Day demonstrations held around the country on Saturday. This makes Oct 18 very likely the biggest single-day U.S. protest event since 1970. www.gelliottmorris.com/p/second-no-...
Second "No Kings Day" protests likely the largest single-day political demonstration since 1970, with 4.2-7.6 million participants

A lot of centrist commentators who genuinely got worked up about the unforgivably insulting nature of "cling to guns and religion" or "basket of deplorables" are weirdly silent about Trump portraying himself as literally shitting on American cities
