one response to this (correct) observation is to say “well, the cops will attack you no matter how you dress and behave.” that’s right. images of cops and ICE beating grandmas and kids in inflatable frog costumes is a win for the opposition.

At the time period I was looking at - 1920s - the citizenship form in New York had a space to put the name you had on entry, so the forms could be connected. But there was no requirement at all that it be consistent.

That said, I came across a citizenship denial document mixed in. The reason for denial was that the woman had apparently lied on entry about her marital status.

I was doing a digitization of immigration records. When someone applied for citizenship, they would collect all the previous paperwork and put it together. The names often changed from record to record; mostly what was needed was two witnesses attesting the truth of the document.

I think a lot of people don't quite grasp how little documentation of a legal identity anyone had before, like, the 1930s. No social security number, no green card, no driver's license. This made you reliant on your social network; OTOH nobody could force you to write your name a certain way.

Here are the facts: he posed a public safety threat with an extensive rap sheet including violent assault with a dangerous weapon, battery, breaking and entering, destruction of property.
He was in possession of a firearm and 5-7 inch knife when arrested.

the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.
