I just had a charming fellow explain to me that my family of Jewish bakers who fled Poland when half of them were murdered are appropriating Polish Jewish culture by eating bagels in the places they fled to. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Neat footnote - when my family fled for their lives, some Poles moved into the bakery and continued baking. My cousin visited the bakery last summer. It’s still there. Still a bakery. Still has the apartments above where my entire family lived. Now the Polish bakers live there with their families.

Couldn’t get a US immigration visa, moved to Palestine. Her children and grandchildren and great grandchildren are Israeli. Your opinion on what they should call the bread their great-grandfather baked in his bakery in Poland is as ill-informed as it is unwelcome.

Getting any country to accept them as refugees was a project! It took years of effort while they lived in Displaced Person camps. Their migration papers listed them as “stateless.” I can show you copies. So my dad was born in the Bronx, but his cousin Malka, who was born in Poland and …

Your polish bread example hits close to home. My grandfather was born in his family’s bakery in Poland, in a multigenerational family of Jewish bakers. After about half the family was murdered by Nazis, some of the survivors moved to the US and some moved to Israel.

Man it really sucks that people heard “Jews and Israelis aren’t synonymous” and interpreted that to mean “you can be as antisemitic as you want if you just say Israeli instead of Jewish”
