Over a third of the old internet no longer exists, 87% of all video games before 2009 are lost media, 40% of the Million Dollar Homepage was dead links as of 2019, etc.

*And* this media void is being filled with mindboggling quantities of ai slop.

BY THE WAY

If you've updated to Windows 11 recently, you're probably on version 25H2.

There's a new setting in Settings: Privacy & Security.

Scroll aaaaaaaalll the way to the bottom and you'll see "Text and Image Generation."

TURN IT OFF.
ha, ha, it's a "fun" time to be a classics-focused historian! 🙃 i hadn't heard about this particular stupidity!!
My latest from @hyperallergic.com is on Trump’s proposed triumphal arch—& why looking at the structure’s history symbolizing imperialism & subjugation + its reception (Napoleon, Hitler) is important. NB: the ecclesiastical architectural firm pitching this structure. hyperallergic.com/1050375/the-...
The Arch of Trump’s Triumph and Downfall
Triumphal arches have been used for imperialistic ends since Roman antiquity, and the president’s latest proposal is no exception.

Not a shitpost: #NoKings is feel-good performative activism for comfortable mostly upper and upper middle class white folks and that’s good, actually. Millions of people in the streets protesting a fascist regime is good. It is good for the normie baseline to be massive displays of public dissent.

Sleep is a biological necessity, and sleep deprivation has real physical, psychological, and social consequences that need to be taken seriously. The way our society treats it as slothful to sleep according to natural rhythms (including midday naps and variant chronotypes like night owls) is evil.
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?

we found that most protein powders and shakes have more lead in one serving than our experts say is safe to have in a day (🧵)

Miss Major Griffin-Gracy passed away today according to the House of GG. She was a veteran of the Stonewall rebellion and a lifelong organizer for the safety and dignity of trans people, sex workers, and the incarcerated. She came from the same generation and milieu as Marsha and Sylvia. She was 78.

Quick reminder that Christopher Columbus was considered a vile, repulsive, evil man even in his own time. His actions as governor of Spain's New World colonies landed him in prison for his cruelty and violence.

I think we really should stop using antifa and just fully say anti-fascist and get them saying they are against anti fascism. Using antifa is giving them some distance and I genuinely think some of their base don’t even know that’s what it stands for.

It looks like the CW drama I want it to be, it’s great to see some old friends, and I’m excited to explore more of the 34th century setting.

(Still nothing to disprove my theory that the version of the EMH here is the one left behind in the Delta Quadrant, who woke up in a museum 700 years later.)
so not only are they homophobic as fuck, refusing to shelter queer people, they're doing... THIS SHIT. the Salvation Army can go eat shit
Fun fact about the Salvation Army: they use a form of substance use treatment called work therapy. Oh, and by treatment, I mean they have people who have been convicted of drug charges work for their stores & warehouses in exchange for room, board, around a $1 a week, and minimal actual therapy.

just in general bending my life towards spending as much of my time as possible around freaks and queers and weirdos has been the best thing ever
Good article! important to understand how nationalism uses & abuses historical narratives to fit their agenda.
I love studing history (it was my major) yet I'm frustrated so many don't understand how it's not a static thing, not a neutral thing; & our knowledge of history is connected to science.
The late antique communion bread find was exciting. And it again came up what the oldest bread known is. As Stephanie Wong and I wrote about, the oldest extant bread appears to be from Jordan—not Turkey. hyperallergic.com/878348/disco...
Discovery of 8,600-Year-Old Bread Gives Rise to Half-Baked Claims
Turkey’s narrative surrounding “the world’s oldest bread” raises questions about how archaeological heritage is used for nationalistic ends.
