It's like a less bad version of him promising to fund military pay directly during the shutdown. That was Downright Terrifying, but this is Still Bad.

It should use taxpayer money and he should have proven first, w/ great personal effort, that this is a worthwhile expenditure! (Hint: it's not.)

It flies under the radar because it is overwhelmed by the sheer repulsiveness of the physical destruction of the east wing, but there is no way that a president should be allowed to use private money to change public property. It circumvents the power of the purse.

It's always been obvious that austerity politics makes everyone more susceptible to fascism, including the rich. It's paternalistic authoritarianism, the Daddy State if you will, that is punishing us "for our own good." Starving people while feeding the rich is bad for democracy.
