Oakland’s 2023 rezonings were a massive expansion of zoned capacity — especially in high resource areas.

Very few people are seemingly aware this happened.

I suspect it’s because Oakland doesn’t have a real daily newspaper and shares a TV/media market with bigger and wealthier cities.
I havent been following Oakland's housing element. SF has to do Family Zoning corridor rezoning and Berkeley's already passed Missing Middle citywide and is currently doing a few more corridor upzonings. What's Oakland's major rezoning areas? Is it just Rockridge (which now SB 79 has taken care of)?

A core value Elon-aligned folks are trying to imbue into LLMs is that racism towards Indians is acceptable and is based on some fact. Just so sickening

A friend of mine in Chicago just shared a video on IG of an ICE operation near her house. The operation happened just minutes before the neighborhood Halloween parade. ICE used tear gas and multiple parents had to wash their kids' (including toddlers) eyes out.

Scientists themselves determine what is valued within science. Yet we act as if beholden to external managers, bean-counters who confuse the production of papers with scientific progress.

We don't have to find better ways to navigate the prison of metrics-driven scientific assessment.

So Berkeley people - do you think the two people behind “Beautiful San Pablo” want to keep the 4 lanes of traffic, the dumpy 1 story commercial buildings, or both?

Just remember, “with all due respect” does not confirm that any respect, in fact, is due.
This ends with some big Trump donor getting a low-yield B61 for a gender reveal party.
Only 7 out of 71 employees at the Los Alamos NNSA field site are working, the rest furloughed.

At the Albuquerque site (overseeing Sandia NM), only 7/81.

"The furloughs are the [NNSA's] first since its creation in 2000, as none occurred during previous shutdowns"

The government shutdown feels a bit like a decapitation strike aimed at the entire legislative branch.

The administration can’t keep the government shutdown forever, but I could easily see them using the plenary executive theory to circumvent congressional appropriations authority, for example.

Here's a photo of my friend and colleague, Jorge Bautista, getting shot in the face with a flashbang grenade. The ICE Agent is so afraid of Jorge (who was posing no threat) that he has wet himself. Please share this photo. Everyone needs to know what cowards ICE agents are.

A number of Berkeley “townhouses” are live-work (remember when that was a huge deal 20 years ago?) and ineligible for conventional mortgages. So most are owned by investors who rent them out.
If it’s any consolation, it also feels like whatever was happening stopped HARD at the end of September.
Been shopping around since July. Was encouraged by June sale prices, but then in August everything exploded. Open houses packed with people wearing crisp and clean Giants baseball hats…the mark of SF transplants. Made 2 offers based on June analysis and got beat by multiple bids way, way over mine.
Berkeley saw a $300K-$500K jump in “starter houses” from July to September.

also, while it is not necessarily dispositive, his grandfather was in the top 1% of successful architects two generations back and his 'oysterman' job got started to provide ingredients to his mother's successful restaurant. family money seems likely to be in the mid-eight-figure range.
