Incidentally, I’ve been chafing a bit at the “No Kings” thing, because there are loads of monarchies that have more limits on executive power than the US does, but it has the great advantage that it makes Americans who want to oppose it sound, well, unamerican….

one of the reasons they're so mad at "no kings" is that they thought they were going to get a different kind of protest. they *want* the black bloc to be out there fighting with the cops. those are the images they've been trying to generate from "go." instead--

"A few years ago I received a DM from Zohran Kwame Mamdani. Only recently did I discover its existence. It was a very unusual DM—especially coming from a local assemblyman who would soon be running for higher office. He had very little name recognition at the time, and could have benefited from publicity. But unlike the thousands of messages I’ve received from people with something to promote, Zohran did not ask to be featured on Humans of New York. Instead he asked if he could introduce me to taxi drivers that were struggling beneath the burden of debt. Coming from a man with political ambitions, this self-denying request was so strange as to be almost singular. I don’t endorse politicians on Humans of New York. But I’ll endorse a good man. And it was a good man who cleared 30 minutes from his schedule yesterday to swing by Grand Central and visit Dear New York’s Vanderbilt Hall Exhibition. Nearly fifty-student artists were visiting that day with their families, and I thought a surprise visit from this widely-loved future mayor would be a special memory for all of them. Before Zohran’s arrival I was convinced I’d made a terrible mistake. The exhibit was filled to capacity with adult visitors. Dear New York is self-funded so there was very little staff and security for crowd control. In the crush of people I was almost certain this special day for the kids would devolve into thirty minutes of selfie requests. But everyone rose to the occasion."

Eleven very notable adult photographers are also featured in the show, but even they took a step back, so that these students could briefly have the stage to themselves. Each child stood by their work and Zohran was able to meet all of them, one at a time, and honor their contributions to the most-visited art show in New York City. Argh. Power outage in cambridge. I’m out of town but got notice from all my systems and watched as the main UPS ran out of battery and then internet totally dropped. Guess I need a bigger battery if I want more than 20 minutes of uptime in a blackout these days.

St. Louis - A 26-year-old Olive Garden waitress was arrested Saturday evening after what police described as a "gratuity dispute that got out of control."
Witnesses say the waitress had been serving a couple on a date night who ran up a $94 bill with pasta, wine, and appetizers.
When they left no tip, she allegedly slammed the receipt onto their table and shouted, "Unlimited breadsticks doesn't mean unlimited free labor!"
Police say she then grabbed a basket of breadsticks and hurled it at the couple, striking the man in the chest. As staff intervened, she shoved the woman toward the wall and accused them of "stealing her wages."
She was arrested on charges of assault and disorderly conduct.
The incident drew so much attention that a customer in the dining room started a livestream - and within hours, clips of the breadstick-throwing meltdown had racked up millions of views, turning the restaurant into an online spectacle.

There’s a bunch of these going around now I think. I saw one a couple days ago where she was an Olive Garden waitress who didn’t get a tip and ended up in a similar situation with a witty repartee (something like: “it says unlimited free breadsticks not unlimited free labor!”). Def. a pattern.
