“You’re so cool.”

I’m not quite sure how the Ed Wood version of Vampira keeps her job as a horror movie hostess for more than a week given the utter legit disdain and lack of knowledge she has about the films she’s presenting (the jugs don’t quite make up for just how angry the Forry Ackerman crowd would be)

Dumb question: Have any BOOKS ever had a licensed pinball? Not movie or tv adaptations of books- an actual prose novel licensed as a theme for a pinball game.

🧪Did I really have time for this story? No, I did not, for reasons I'll be sharing soon. Did I absolutely feel compelled to write it anyways? You know I did! A viral mystery solved by science. Read on @sciencenews.bsky.social

Also, I have a new to-do for my trip to Chicago for #SciWri25 next month!
The viral Chicago ‘Rat Hole’ almost certainly wasn't made by a rat
Researchers used methods from paleontology to analyze the quirky local landmark, created when a rodent of a certain size fell into wet concrete.

If this surprisingly caked-up Halloween skin doesn’t get released into Fortnite by the end of this week, there might be some murder/suicides among the gooning community.

There’s quite a lot of ad compilations outta Pittsburgh, and my friend’s Judgie and Bupshie spent ALL their time doing nothing but taping broadcast TV - I sometimes wonder, when they died, if some part of their vast collection of tapes somehow made their way online.

Thinking about how we probably won't have "2025 Nostalgic Ad Compilations" videos twenty years from now because we don't record TV anymore.

me: all the grandfather clock guys (both of them) have 2 stars on yelp due to being introverts
me: and because clocks in general are fiddly
bff: lol, but that’s why they are clock guys!
me: exactly. Text and don’t scare ‘em

I love ILM’s Brian Johnson trying to explain the idea of this CGI X-Wing to Alan Arnold (in Arnold’s fantastic making-of-Empire Strikes Back diary) in 1979:

the Bajoran version of the Bechdel test is “do two named women talk to each other about something other than murder” and I love “Deep Space Nine” because it fails almost every episode

A grim reminder of how things have changed as I listen to Dr. Demento's final show (a countdown of the 40 most requested songs from the show's 55 year history) and he has to explain why Julie Brown's "The Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun" stopped getting requested as much as it did during the '80s/'90s.

So like this is funnier and more offensive than anything anyone else said about Kirk that got them fired

Has any artist ever been paid to draw another person's face as often as Struzan was with Harrison Ford?

Dude probably saw that stubbled face swimming in the dark when he closed his eyes at night.

When Disney secured the Indiana Jones Adventure ride license from Lucasfilm, they didn’t have permission to use Harrison Ford’s likeness for the poster art. Drew Struzan called Harrison Ford and directly asked him. Ford permitted Struzan because he inherently trusted him.
Page 52 of “Poster Art of the Disney Parks.”

Two poster concepts for the Indiana Jones Adventure ride.

"When Disney licensed Lucasfilm for the Indiana Jones ride, it did not secure the rights to Harrison Ford's likeness. So, when it came to the poster, my take on it was, Gee, if I painted Indiana Jones and don't put Harrison's likeness on it, I'll look like a fool; like I couldn't do it. So I got his phone number and called him up to ask for his permission. He had just the gentlest Indy voice you ever heard. I told him the situation and his response was,
'If you're painting it then you go right ahead.’”

Take a few minutes to appreciate Drew Struzan creating the original artwork for THE PHANTOM MENACE. Truly a master at work.

You know what? Fuck Drew Struzan and his immaculately-rendered Amucks’s tights and the burnished highlights on the vacuum cleaner’s chrome top and all the tiny detailing in Peggy Hill’s flannel skirts (*takes a baseball bat to his own Cintiq*) youtu.be/7t2VUBfNJeg?...

Shit, see that glow at the treeline?

Whenever I see that in real life at dusk I *still* think “Ah, a Drew Struzan sunset!”
mudron.bsky.social
Look at the wraparound artwork Struzan did for the Indiana Jones books in the early 90s, complete with hand-drawn titles and author blocks!

16 year old me would stand in a mall B. Dalton and could feel the thunder & hear the music with one of these books in my fat little white suburban hands.
