“Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'”

a fun thing to consider is that China, and probably Russia, almost certainly have the ability to post from the president's Truth Social account. they just know that they only get to use that *once*.
I think the White House is probably absolutely riddled with spies and listening devices and also they're getting exactly as much actionable intelligence as you'd get from browsing Truth Social.

This thread makes a point I find myself coming to often these days.

It's hard to make this point in a way that doesn't sound like a threat, but it's just a fact that for centuries the wealthy in America worried that the mob would come get them and did all they could to avoid that fate.
lol what the wealthy today don't seem to understand is part of staying wealthy in society is not pissing off the masses.

There's a reason why Carnegie and the Rockefellers poured money into institutions. Gutting institutions and making it harder for the masses to survive is a...choice.

FYI: it’s, uh, *not nothing* that the head of an entire Christian denomination — here Rev. Karen Georgia A. Thompson of the United Church of Christ — issued a statement decrying DHS agents for shooting one of her pastors in the face with a pepper round, adding, “No one is safe from tyranny."
This would be a trillion times more effective than a Very Strongly Worded letter, @schumer.senate.gov and also a trillion times more effective than a debate with Mike Johnson, @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social
If I were running the DNC, there would be Democratic Party sponsored food relief banks across the country right now that specifically welcomed anyone regardless of party affiliation.

Along with the food, there could be voter registration and links to runforsomething.net

That is an insane amount of rain. Absolutely mind boggling.
Jamaica, in particular, will likely suffer catastrophic impacts from now rapidly-intensifying (but slow-moving) Hurricane #Melissa. A *Category 5* landfall now appears to be the most likely outcome, & 30-40+ inches of *additional* rain in mountains will lead to extreme flooding.

Today in "Wildly illegal trade policy that violates both US domestic law & multiple international treaties, including the USMCA and the WTO, both of which apply to 🇺🇸-🇨🇦 trade relations, except for this One Special Boy because we have stopped being a serious country where anything matters"
I can't help but think we're nearing the point where military leadership is going to have to choose to do the right thing, or the illegal, wrong, thing, and that is really fucking depressing and scary.

Time to go down some beers and watch the kiddos play at the local burger place. Stay safe, friend

“Don’t protest.” Not great when federal law enforcement leaders start directly and openly denying the existence of the literal and explicit First Amendment.
“The use of force that I’ve seen has been exemplary — the least amount of force necessary to accomplish the mission,” Bovino told @cbsnews.com Friday. “If someone strays into a pepper ball, then that’s on them. Don’t protest and don’t trespass.”

I do think we have a pretty good chance of turning gambling into a genuine popular moral crusade 19th century style, because it's becoming a social evil that's destroying young men's lives in particular but also making sports coverage really shit.
Almost every major news story this week is about how the entire economy is now gambling, scams, bribes and theft.

Trump flunkie Todd Blanche says it's a crime for states to hold violent ICE thugs responsible for their crimes. He is wrong.
That wasn't Taiwan, it was Hong Kong.

it’s beyond comprehension that scenes like this have become routine in chicago.

masked soldiers are carelessly lobbing chemical weapons—that are banned from use during warfare—on random residential streets.

this is the third time feds have tear-gassed residents in chicago *this week!*
Video from witness here from the moment CBP gassed neighbors who had gathered outside after the kidnapping.

Agent rolls a canister at the crowd out of the window of their car as they reverse away from people with whistles and bikes.
I don't know how everyone in Chicago has managed to restrain their reactions. I don't think I'd have the ability to contain my rage and act upon it. Kudos to Chicagoans -- better people than I.

Federal Judge Orders Border Patrol Chief Greg Bovino, Who Fired Tear Gas at Little Village Crowd, Into Court
The judge’s order came less than 24 hours after Border Patrol Chief Greg Bovino fired tear gas at a crowd during an aggressive raid in Little Village.

“‘Don’t protest’ or else we’ll use force” is the very definition of an unconstitutional constraint on free speech.
people like this cannot be reformed

If federal Democrats simply said that they won’t be cowed little sycophants and let Trump do whatever he wants because that’s the actual fucking job that they’ve been hired for—and Republicans won’t do theirs because they’re weak and useless, so many people would be energized behind them
The correct response to this is not to attack Trump or his cronies (they know what they’re doing), but GOP Reps and Senators for being sniveling little cowards and pieces of shit who won’t do their goddamn jobs and love licking Trump’s feet and getting publicly degraded while looting the Treasury

I’m going to say again that the shutdown is the power consolidation. While Congress neuters itself, he’s simply taking control of what they can’t/won’t in their absence. And Democrats aren’t upping the ante in what it will take to reopen—namely demanding Article 1 powers be honored.
I don’t need to explain why it’s wildly unacceptable for the military to be illegally privately financed by the president’s wealthy allies, right?
New: The Pentagon confirms to CNN it will funnel $130M from an anonymous Trump “friend” toward military pay.

Asked about the donor’s identity and any foreign or domestic entanglements, the WH referred questions to DoD. DoD then referred questions back to the WH
