the big takeaway from Next Fest as always is that things are beyond saturated and there is no room for games that parse as "another one of those (insert genre here)." survivorship bias shapes too many projects.

I was a young conservative in DC and the story about reporters pawing through Bork's trash looking for his video rental receipts definitely had an effect on me. Bork was qualified, but the attacks were so intense that his name became a verb.

I'd like to try something out on you. A lot of people won't like it -- that's okay. It's my trade. Democrats made a devil out of Robert H. Bork -- an esteemed Yale Law prof, a brilliant Court of Appeals judge. Buddy of Alex Bickel! Judge Bork was the cream of the conservative judicial crop. Now Republicans are nominating and confirming Emil Bove. Democrats should have accepted us conservatives as fellow liberal democrats, instead of putting swastikas on us. Now you got Bove, Judge Jeanine, and Bondi. (Gaetz, of course, was Trump's first AG nominee.) If you paint Bork, Romney, and, well, me as beyond the pale... Anyway, damn you (to put it politely).

Oh good, ChatGPT is getting "erotica for verified adults" later this year

We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.

Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases.

In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing).

In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.

The natural opposition to the supplements industry come from the anti-regulation free market poisoners and their GOP allies but if my old brain properly recalls this, Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) was a key figure in exempting the industry from FDA oversight during the Clinton administration.

The non-regulation of the supplements industry is so weird to me. Back when I was into that stuff, you'd see protein powders boasting biologically impossible amounts of protein per scoop and that's like the least sketchy thing going on.

I think this is just more internecine conflict, not them doing anything reasonable. at best, they're just hedging their bets. that'd make them more savvy than the rest, but it doesn't make them more ethical or anything. we do not have to hand it to them
