living in fear is pretending it’s still 2019 because it’s too hard to acknowledge that covid is really bad for you, and isn’t going anywhere until enough people dedicate themselves to stopping the spread again (or enough people receive a sterilizing vaccine, which is still being trialed)

Living in fear is ignoring science and endangering lives and your own health because you’re terrified of not fitting in.

The director of student media at Indiana University was fired amidst a dispute between university leadership and editors at the Indiana Daily Student over what content gets printed in the student newspaper.

As director of student media, Jim Rodenbush did not directly oversee or have any say over the content published in the IDS, per a charter between the IDS and the university. But he told IndyStar his firing follows a series of meetings with IU Media School leadership in which it grew increasingly apparent they were expecting him to officially prohibit students from publishing news.

yeah, i think a commitment to public health obligates you to get vaccinated and, when you are sick, do what you can to avoid spreading that to other people. the demand that one mask at all times in public spaces is, i think, unreasonable.

see this is just wrong. factually and scientifically. don't mask if you don't want to. but don't pretend it's a perfectly reasonable and consistent position if you're committed to accessibility in public spaces for all people. and if you care about not getting sick.

I just think it's WILD that a small niche of people asking anyone who cares to wear a mask is treated like an ominous, ever-present threat, as if public opinion for "normalcy" hasn't completely skewed even medical offices and hospitals into fervent non-masking.

It is rational to fear what covid does to the body.

And this ableist machismo, separating "fear" and rational thinking, isn't helpful here. They aren't dichotomous.

It is rational to mask in order to avoid covid, long covid, spreading covid, and causing others to have long covid.

Those of us living with complex chronic illness have been screaming about eugenics since the “rush back to normal”.

Once people heard that Covid was “only a risk to the vulnerable” they couldn’t wait to drop precautions.

That’s eugenics.

Most people aren’t asking you mask at all times.

They ask that you mask in essential places: public transit, hospitals, doctors’ offices, pharmacies etc.

Places high risk people can’t avoid.

But if you hate wearing masks? Then advocate for indoor air quality: ventilation, filtration, etc.

regardless of if you actually mask or not, the threat is real. just say i don't want to mask instead of positioning yourself as being more thoughtful and rational than ppl who take the threat of covid seriously.
