One of the truly great things is how much student newsrooms have stepped up to meet the moment of the last few years

Indiana University fires IDS
adviser amid push to control
student newspaper's content The director of student media at Indiana University was fired amidst a dispute between university leadership and editors at the Indiana Daily Student over what content gets printed in the student newspaper.

As director of student media, Jim Rodenbush did not directly oversee or have any say over the content published in the IDS, per a charter between the IDS and the university. But he told IndyStar his firing follows a series of meetings with IU Media School leadership in which it grew increasingly apparent they were expecting him to officially prohibit students from publishing news.

People are VERY huffy and stompy about this post but just as an inside opinion from someone in LC community, It’s hard to believe there is solidarity with the disabled and high risk people who need to avoid covid when our one primary ask is met with accusations that, hey, maybe we’re just CRAZY?
chantzy.bsky.social
Dear liberals,

If you identify as a leftist who believes in intersectional justice & fighting fascism, please wear a mask in public. It’s one small act of solidarity with the millions living with long Covid - and a reminder that caring for others includes protecting their health

The Portland Frog army has now infiltrated Tulsa, OK and they’ve made an unlikely alliance with the T-Rex infantry and Sharks on Hoverboards mercenary forces.

This is truly terrifying.

Does privilege do this to your brain? Folks are pretending that being asked to mask is the most oppressive thing to ever exist and I'd like to know why. Selfishness? Privilege? You weren't raised right? What is it? What about masking is "unreasonable"?
jamellebouie.net
yeah, i think a commitment to public health obligates you to get vaccinated and, when you are sick, do what you can to avoid spreading that to other people. the demand that one mask at all times in public spaces is, i think, unreasonable.

see this is just wrong. factually and scientifically. don't mask if you don't want to. but don't pretend it's a perfectly reasonable and consistent position if you're committed to accessibility in public spaces for all people. and if you care about not getting sick.
jamellebouie.net
(and i think it is a demand that stems from fear more than a rational assessment of the threat environment)

I just think it's WILD that a small niche of people asking anyone who cares to wear a mask is treated like an ominous, ever-present threat, as if public opinion for "normalcy" hasn't completely skewed even medical offices and hospitals into fervent non-masking.

Sorry guys, the world changed, covid wasn’t here before and is now, that does require some adaptation, or some eugenics, I guess pick your side.

It is rational to fear what covid does to the body.

And this ableist machismo, separating "fear" and rational thinking, isn't helpful here. They aren't dichotomous.

It is rational to mask in order to avoid covid, long covid, spreading covid, and causing others to have long covid.

It’s really disheartening to see people who admit this regime is doing eugenics fail to understand the ways in which chronically ill, disabled, and immunocompromised people are just absolutely fucked by Long Covid

A major reason why I have never stopped masking and taking precautions is I have vulnerable people around me and I (selfishly?) refuse to be the reason they get sick or die.
broadwaybabyto.bsky.social
Those of us living with complex chronic illness have been screaming about eugenics since the “rush back to normal”.

Once people heard that Covid was “only a risk to the vulnerable” they couldn’t wait to drop precautions.

That’s eugenics.

The vulnerable matter too.

Also, it’s a risk to everyone

Most people aren’t asking you mask at all times.

They ask that you mask in essential places: public transit, hospitals, doctors’ offices, pharmacies etc.

Places high risk people can’t avoid.

But if you hate wearing masks? Then advocate for indoor air quality: ventilation, filtration, etc.

regardless of if you actually mask or not, the threat is real. just say i don't want to mask instead of positioning yourself as being more thoughtful and rational than ppl who take the threat of covid seriously.

Not that anybody comes to me for Maine politics, but the fact that the Democrats successfully convinced a 77yo Governor to primary the 41yo progressive, is today's example of why the Democrats fucking stay failing.

Susan Collins is 72 and if Schumer gets his way, she'll be the YOUNGER choice!

Look, if you don't want to mask in public, that's your deal.
My point is don't call yourself a leftist & pretend to care about disability justice

I don't know many Covid conscious people asking folks to cancel movie theatres & Thanksgiving. You can go to movies in a mask & test/ventilate before indoor gatherings. None of this is hard
agrippanothing.bsky.social
When i was an adolescent going into young adulthood in while HIV was stalking and killing us. We lived our lives doing risk assessment and trying to live our lives and not not lose our minds. These people wouldn't last 10 mins in that shit. We're not canceling movie theaters and Thanksgiving.
katsharki3.bsky.social
(I guess this should also say rational allies of disabled people. I don't always phrase myself well when I'm pissed off. I've been masking everywhere since 2020, including teaching 4 hour labs masked, and I'm not going to stop just because it makes other people uncomfortable)

It's hard to feel hopeful about us defeating fascism when a bunch of liberals with large accounts on this site waste time punching down on disabled folks, minimizing Covid & chronic illness.

Fascism starts with normalizing eugenics
katsharki3.bsky.social
Also to be clear no one is asking for masking in every single public place. RATIONAL, disabled people are asking for masking at places where they need to go: Hospitals, public transit, grocery stores, pharmacies. Show solidarity. Show that you care about other people's health as well as your own!!!

You really need to engage your critical thinking skills for like one minute if you think wearing a mask is a fear-based decision and not a care-based one.

Disabled people are, in fact, typically rational assessors of the threat environments they inhabit. Their pleas with their "community" to mask aren't mutually exclusive with that, and frankly, disabled people showing others the door for being asshats about masking is very rational threat assessment.

We ask people to consider masking other places in public because that would make those spaces inclusive for those of us who have been effectively shut out of society for almost 6 years now. To normalize the idea of public masking to make it harder for states to criminalize it.
