The throughline from the Romney brand Republicans to MAGA really does come down in large part to back-to-back Obama terms incensing the US right wing so much that they decided to stomp on the accelerator rather than continuing the slow frog-boil, and the base loved it so much they did a full pivot

Also, as has been repeatedly told to this guy, nobody was saying "Mitt Romney is Hitler," that's simply not even close to reality. You can watch youtube videos of campaign ads and debates from that period. Lot of "binders full of women" and "this guy is a corporate douchebag," not a lot of Hitler

It was kind of funny too because I asked him once "so what kind of movies do you like?" and he told me "oh, I don't really care, I just haven't seen these ones yet," which was a fascinating answer because clearly he had no interest in the movies as movies but he DID care if he'd seen them before

In retrospect, maybe! Like to be clear, it DID seem to work for him, guy was plowing through his classes, at times I envied his ability to lock in, but if I tried doing that same thing I would drive myself insane

To be clear, I don't necessarily think this guy was dumb, he was pursuing a dentistry degree and fuck knows I couldn't have done that, but I think it's always going to stick with me just how completely and irreconcilably alien that guy's deal was from mine, just zero shared context on any level

The same guy was once extremely taken aback when he came back to the apartment one day and found me sitting there reading a book. He absolutely couldn't wrap his head around wanting to read for fun, reading was the thing he did for classes, why would he want to do that during his free time?

Oh good, ChatGPT is getting "erotica for verified adults" later this year

We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.

Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases.

In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing).

In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.

Every other person I have ever seen making the "trans = bourgeoisie" argument has done so to argue that trans people are a societal aberration that crops up because we don't have enough hard-working manual labor jobs turning giant drills in mud or whatever, just repackaged "soft times make weak men"
