A 2021 study from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics showed that 52% of all trips in the U.S. were less than three miles. 28% of trips were less than one mile. With slight tweaks, many of those trips could be done on bikes, e-bikes and other light electric vehicles, and walking.
I'm tempted to listen because I've yet to read an argument about "car addiction" that factors in that the continental United States covers 3.7 million square miles.
Check out the new Factually! episode with Sarah Goodyear and Doug Gordon: How to Break America's Car Addiction.

I agree 💯% with this take.

I once mentioned this on Twitter in response to people calling Donald Trump “fat” and “orange”.

Some people got quite cross with me 🤷🏾‍♂️
It doesn't matter how despicable a person is, mocking their innate physical appearance is always wrong.

Not because it's cruel to them, but because it perpetuates the harmful idea that innate physical appearance has anything to do with one's character / beliefs / actions.
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?

well, there you have it
There is a French saying that goes: "on choisi ses amis pas sa famille". One chooses their friends not their family. Maybe choosing one's family can be a lot healthier some situations.

OK. It's going to be coming out soon because of the relentless investigations of Pam Bondi and Kash Patel, so I might as well admit it before the news breaks:

I am the General Counsel of Antifa.

It’s important to flood social media and news channels with news about how ICE lies, so that potential jurors see it.

history teacher in 50 years: So in September, that’s when the president signed an executive order criminalizing anti-fascism and saying all resistance would be crushed

student: oh so that’s when the whole country realized they were living under fascism

teacher: haha what? oh no lol not at all. no.
That picture at the bottom even looks like it's generated by AI. Something looks odd in it.
The more I move on from academia and that PhD the more I realize how bad it was, especially financially. And I was very aware it was very bad while in the middle of it.

Despite everything I still have fundamental faith in the American people turning this around and making things better.

A very big Onion announcement:

The Onion has spent the last two months working on a masterpiece.

It's a documentary titled Jeffrey Epstein: Bad Pedophile.

It's so good, in fact, we were set to release it in theatres nationwide on October 2nd.

Then two weeks ago, Charlie Kirk was shot.

Karen Attiah at WaPo championing Jamal Khashoggi, who was killed by the Saudi govt for writing critically about them, then getting fired from WaPo for writing critically about the US govt's veneration of Charlie Kirk is such an illustration of this moment, and how "free speech" has been manipulated.

Every time I feel like I know a lot about the rise of fascism in Germany, I learn something new.
My mom called me last night about the Kimmel firing, saying "This is how Hitler got started!" I quickly responded, "By firing the late night tv hosts?"

Turns out, mom was right.

I gave my heart and soul to that place. Built entire sections for journalists pushed out of their home countries.

When the writer I hired, Jamal Khashoggi was murdered by Saudi Arabia, they paraded me around as a symbol for press freedom.

I put MY LIFE on the line to defend journalism and WaPo.
weird that neither of these articles two main stories decrying censorship mention WaPo's firing of @karenattiah.bsky.social I guess democracy really does die in darkness
