Hi everyone!

I'm Fergus Murray. I'm a science person, writer of nonfiction, and #Autistic community organiser (Chair of @amasedin.bsky.social). Also #ADHD, but I often just say I'm monotropic.

I'm here to post and learn more about #neurodiversity, politics, science, language and other things.

The real blockers are the water profiteers – and Labour won’t touch them because it’s in bed with the lobbyists.

Ex-MPs like Angela Smith went from defending water firms to working for them. Current ministers have backgrounds in water lobbying.

Who do you think you’re fooling?
Keir Starmer tweet:

National renewal means more homes, more jobs, and more money back in working people's pockets.
But to get there, we need to take on the blockers…

It's such a shame about Steven Pinker and Richard Dawkins.

*sigh*

The book itself is arguably not that interesting, but the video a fascinating window into a certain milieu of public intellectual (or would-be intellectual), and the role of racism, sexual assault and paid lobbyists in the nonsense about 'cancel culture'.

Just finished watching Shaun's epic 4-hour takedown of the extremely silly book 'The War on Science', which is not about the actual war on science, and in fact barely touches on that at all.

Entertaining and informative, but it took me all week to get through this.

Read this for two reasons:

1. It shows that everyone hates Wes Streeting to the point it’s actually funny.

2. It shows how absolutist and homophobic these anti trans campaigners are.

I think you can go further and say he lied.

And he continues to lie. He tells Christian publications that he doesn’t think trans people exist and then he tells Labour Party meetings he feels awful for trans people about the blockers ban HE enforces.

I still think that Bluesky needs to (1) default the alt text nudge to on and (2) give extra nudging to large accounts.

Questions of power in therapy are often missed in training and CPD. However, they are inherently linked to much of the work we do. We are prepared to deal with power and harm in interpersonal dynamics, but our profession often doesn't include structural and social perspectives.1/

After a long pause, I've just done another England Covid & NHS update as we head into the autumn/winter season.

TLDR: we're in a significant Covid wave now, the NHS is stretched, get boosted if you're eligible.

Here's a T. Rex bored to death trying to bite their own tail. My partner asked me to animate it in stop motion, after she watched a video about the very important topic of "could T. Rex chew its own tail like a dog". The puppet is still a work in progress 🦖

I understand that some people think a summary of the text is better, and... *Maybe*, if you also link to the full text, I guess?

But I can't reconcile this with any of the guidelines I've read for #altText.
fergus.oolong.co.uk
If you post images of text, without the text itself in the alt text, you are not giving the same information to people who can't see the image.

You are also excluding the possibility of copy and pasting the text, easily translating it, directly sending it to a web search, and so on.

I used to think that the UK had a better judicial system than the USA with it's blatant politicisation. I assumed our judges would rule 'without fear or favour' on the basis of accumulated law

As an out trans woman, living under a hostile government and a belligerent media, I no longer think that

We sent an FOI request to the Supreme Court asking several questions, including communications relating to the selection of Lord Hodge on the panel for the FWS case. We also asked if any conflicts of interest were considered. 1/

Why do we keep talking about trans healthcare?

Because of statistics like this.
Because every day waiting, in this world obsessed with harassing trans people, is a battle that many don't survive.

So, we keep talking about it, and keep fighting back against systemic transphobia.

For some reason, she can't say 'Britain desperately needs serious investment, after 14 years of the Tories running it down'.

She obviously can't say 'too much power in our society is held by rich people'.

So she's left with 'oh no, need to make numbers match up'.

As someone with a Physics & Philosophy BSc, I always found some of her takes on physics questionable, but I used to enjoy her science communication until she started posting more other stuff.

Here's a thread on r/Physics on a video about her anti-intellectualism.

She also posted a really bad video about neurodiversity, as well as one about how capitalism is fine actually and people who think otherwise are just being silly.

I didn't realize Sabine was over here, but when I looked at her feed ... she endorses the "low white birthrates" stuff, in addition to being anti-trans and friends with noted sexual harasser/friend of Epstein Lawrence Krauss. So, I recommend blocking as fast as possible.
profile for Sabine Hossenfelder (@hossenfelder.bsky.social), whose account here seems to just be links to her videos, and no interactions with anyone. But the topics of those videos include some horrible things.

Lot of people treated a genocide of a people, sponsored by their own country, as an annoying pet issue that needed to be shelved after the killing as complete or pushed aside for other political problems. And pretended that it was just too complicated to engage with.

I wonder how they got to this editorial decision?

Let’s tax wealth fairly, fund front line services & make hope normal again.

Why work so hard to get to the Senate if you don't use your power to fight for what you believe in? Especially at a time like this.
